A Huge Favour Please: George Clooney, Coffee, and Women. A question for the girls...

Lu2, 27 January, 2009 at 10:38 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 23

Hi,

And once again apologies for only posting when I want something. At least I hope with this request, responding might be a little less than tedious and may even be quite interesting. I also apologise if I don't manage to get on here again before lunchtime, I have a pile of meetings. So a huge thanks in advance.

I am currently studying for an MBA and the present module is Consumer Behaviour. Leaving out the psychology and sticking with perceptions, I'd really like to know, please, is what do you, as women, think of the advertisement campaign for Nespresso featuring George Clooney? For those that don't know it, there's a gratuitous Clooney shot a copy of the print ad here: http://www.advertolog.com/paedia/prints/2007/12/23/197540/

Specifically,

How does it make you feel?

What does Clooney conjure up in your mind?

What does it make you think about the coffee?

Does it stand out from other coffee ads? (yes or no will suffice here)

Thank you so very much. Once again, I apologise for only coming on here when I want something. Children, job and course seem to occupy every waking moment. The most I seem to be able to muster these days is some midnight lurking.

Regards,

Lu

Just to add to the answers above, I kind of feel that if they can't be bothered to get a decent picture of George (which can't be hard, the man is gorgeous) then I don't trust them to make decent coffee either.

How does it make you feel? Doesn't have that much of an effect to be honest, it's just an ad for coffee featuring George Clooney

What does Clooney conjure up in your mind? He usually reminds me of Oceans Eleven and how i enjoyed the film

What does it make you think about the coffee? That it would likely be expresso which i'm not overly keen on, i'd not be rushing out to buy some.

Does it stand out from other coffee ads? (yes or no will suffice here) Yes I suppose so, i'm not sure i can immediately bring to mind any other adverts for coffee running at the moment.

    Hope that helps?

How does it make you feel? It doesnt really have much of an effect on me to be honest

What does Clooney conjure up in your mind? Not a lot as I think he is totally over rated

What does it make you think about the coffee? That its a dark roast, cos the picture is dark

Does it stand out from other coffee ads? (yes or no will suffice here) In a way yes, purely because theyve unconventionally used a well known actor to advertise their product

How does it make you feel?. Hmm, doesn't actually make me feel much tbh.

What does Clooney conjure up in your mind? I think he's over-rated (sorry.) He conjures up lots of images of adoring women.

What does it make you think about the coffee?. That it's a bit gimicky.

Does it stand out from other coffee ads? (yes or no will suffice here) No.

How does it make you feel? Not a great deal really

What does Clooney conjure up in your mind? I wouldn't have known who it was if you hasn't said

What does it make you think about the coffee? Not much, other than reminding me that I'd prefer not to drink Nescafe coffee

Does it stand out from other coffee ads? (yes or no will suffice here) Yes, I suppose so, by using an image of a man alone rather than a group of people/a woman, which I think most coffee ads tend to do.

How does it make me feel - nothing really

What does Cloony conjure up - memories of ER and his sleezy reputation on and off screen

What does it make me think about the coffee - I think it's the kind of coffee you'd get in hospital cafetieres and other bad coffee places that were trying to be a bit up market . It's also the kind of gimmicking machine that you'd spend a fortune on and then never use.

Does it stand out - not especially

How does it make you feel?

Irritated. I can't stand the tv ads with the stupid women feeling the need to salivate all over him just to get a coffee pod. It's not like theres a couple of hundred in front of them or anything.

What does Clooney conjure up in your mind?

That he must be desperate for the cash.

What does it make you think about the coffee?

I don't drink coffee but ads with celebs tend to put me off more than anything.

Does it stand out from other coffee ads? (yes or no will suffice here) No.

How does it make you feel? What a stange advert

What does Clooney conjure up in your mind? Nothing

What does it make you think about the coffee? Nothing again because I dont like coffee

Does it stand out from other coffee ads? (yes or no will suffice here) Yes, but it makes me think how desperate they and George Clooney must have been for money and I was quite bemused when I saw if

How does it make you feel?

indifferent. Maybe slightly cross about the waste involved with gittish coffee pod things.

What does Clooney conjure up in your mind?

    smarmy, old-fashioned, unattractive, bleurgh

What does it make you think about the coffee?

Well, given that I think coffee pod things are w@nky and wasteful and GC isn't someone I'd cross the road to see...

    Me again.

Just wanted to say a huge thanks to everyone for responding to this. And to Lois for expanding the discussion on celebrity endorsement; which is precisely what I am writing an essay on at the moment (between trying to speak to a load of European PVC manufacturers): Archetypal Advertising and Celebrity Endorsement.

I put the same questions to a few people from other countries, and although many thought that Mr Clooney conveyed sex appeal, intelligence and sophistication, they couldn't care less about the coffee either. Nespresso's Global Marketing Director stresses that Clooney was chosen because of his wide appeal, intelligence and sophistication. Perhaps I should write and tell him that out of a non-representative sample of possibly 50 women (demographics omitted), and 16 respondents, his thoughts sit with the minority.

    Thank you.

I love the ads purely because I can gaze upon GC's loveliness. However, nothing will ever make me buy a coffee machine that relies on pods, pouches or other gimmicky features, because a few years down the line they'll probably stop making them and I'd be left with a useless piece of kitchen equipment. Fresh ground coffee beans and a bog standard filter machine or cafetiere are more than equal to the task.

He didn't manage to convert me to Martini either. ?

Well judging from the replies on this thread this advertising campaign has really missed the mark! I have to say that print ad looks horrendously cheesey and doesn't represent the product very well IMO.

We own a nespresso machine and have done for about 2 years. We bought ours after a tasting at selfridges - back then you could only buy the pods online or from the Nespresso shop in Knightsbridge but I think this has now changed.

The coffee blends used in the pods are mostly really lovely actually, rich, smooth and intensely flavoured which is why we bought ours.

Lu2 - as mentioned on this thread,I don't think it helps that GC is already linked to Martini advertising and it feels like the coffee brand is trying to hijack a bit of his "glamerous" image?

Think about it a bit more, I'd also add that GC is a bit, well, yesterday, so his endorsement dates the product a bit. And I've always presumed the pods were of instant coffee but it sounds like maybe they are fresh? Perhaps their advertising should focus on that!

Never thought I'd feel sorry for Nestle! ?

How does it make you feel? It doesn't invoke any particular feelings tbh, it's a rather bland advert. The TV advert is pretty crap too imo.

What does Clooney conjure up in your mind? Very norty things, especially when I think of him as a baddie in the oceans series or Dr Ross from ER yum!

What does it make you think about the coffee? Nothing, I don't actually believe GC drinks it and I'm not a fan of nescafe anyway. (Is it made by nescafe? the 'nes' bit made me think that)

Does it stand out from other coffee ads? (yes or no will suffice here) no, don't think of it as a coffee ad just a wee drool over George.

Oh and that's as Pink Han-bag not Sherry (really should log out ?)

The print ad doesn't do anything for me. The TV ad really annoys me.

    Clooney = over-rated, mainstream.

It doesn't stand out from other coffee ads; just makes me wonder why Clooney is doing them.

? Thank you very much, everyone. I've submitted my essay on From Hero to Has-been and it's now provoking much discussion amongst class mates.

To me, this ad is just another generic coffee wank, and I can't be bothered with it. I have an instant bias against any of these pod-orientated coffee machines - as if they 're going to make pods ad naseum! The machines will be redundant soon enough, and what a waste of resources that will be - the Soda Streams of the 00s.

I also have a personal dislike of Nespresso because of its awful 'lifestyle' magazine:

    http://www.guardian.co.uk/commentisfree/2007/nov/26/drink.comment

Let's be honest, it's just a hot drink hat makes you crap more. And makes your breath honk. Yeah, I don't like coffee Smiley winking

I also really hate ads that patronise women and cast them in horrid man-adoring roles. Yeah, because I couldn't afford a Nespresso without fella to pay the tab for me!

Sorry if you work for Nespresso, but you did ask (and weren't to know about my loathing!!!) ?
