A little bit odd?

*CrazyCatLady*, 13 August, 2014 at 21:27 Posted on Planning 0 10

I went wedding dress shopping back in February and decided to book appointments for three different bridal shops on one day (hectic day!)

There were 2 dresses that I was trying to decide between (one in shop 1 and one in shop 2) but, after revisiting shop 1, decided to go with that one. I paid in full for my dress right then and there and excitedly looked forward to it arriving in 3 - 6 months time...

3 months later and my dress arrived. I went to try it on and it didn't need any alterations at all - perfect! However, I was quite surprised by how pushy the shop were for me to take the dress home with me - I'd assumed they would keep it until just before the wedding. I guess that, given I'd paid for it in full, they'd rather have the space than look after my dress.

No biggie - I'd have to just put it in the spare room. But THEN they asked if I'd brought anything with me to take the dress home in. I said no (obviously, hadn't planned on bringing it home) and they told me they could sell me a dress bag for £10.

Admittedly, I thought this was rather odd as I'd assumed a bag would be provided, but never mind.

I then went back to shop 2 as the veil and tiara I'd wanted were from there. I took my dress with me to ensure the veil and tiara looked right with it (it did!) and they were really lovely (especially considering I hadn't bought my dress from them). The assistant asked me if I was about to take my dress back to the bridal shop to look after and I explained that no I wasn't and that I'd even had to pay for the bag myself - she was really shocked and told all the other assistants about it and saying how bad that was...

I know it's only £10, but I think it's the principle more than anything, that in total on BM dresses, suits and my own dress we will have spent about £3,000 in that one shop, and yet still had to pay for a dress bag?!?!?!

Is it a little bit odd? Or does this sound like normal practice?

My dress is from eBay but all my friends who are getting/ got married have had a bag with their dress normally with the shop logo on it.

I do find it quite odd they didn't provide a bag for the dress!

Mine did give me the bag for free. .. but that was after I'd done a bit of haggling and got the price of the dress reduced and they said they'd also give me a free bag.

At which point I literally laughed as I didn't realise you'd have to pay for one after spending x amount on the dress! ?

Hmmmm, yes it does seem a little odd! I too would expect a dress bag/cover to be complimentary. My dress is an ex-sample dress so I left the shop with it there and then; put in a zipped dress cover with the shop name branded on it, with the dress still on its gorgeous hot pink padded coat hanger!

like you said, when you are spending so much money with them, the least you could expect is a freebie dress cover!!

Ooo didn't even think that I may have to pay for the bag, I just assumed that it was part of the overall service when you buy your dress! ? like you say least it was only a tenner!

I've got to buy a bag too! The shop my bridesmaid dress for my best mate's wedding doesn't have storage, we might actually have to pick that up and then go back for alterations! Weird

Seems different shops just have different rules then - glad I'm not the only one at least Smiley smile still think it's a bit odd though...

I paid £25 for my bag, and it's just a bit of tat really. I could have got it off ebay for £2 I reckon. Problem is I was in London and had to get the dress back to essex. I was not impressed.

my advice is to check with the shop beforehand and get yourself one from ebay if they're charging silly money.

not much help as you've paid I know, just a tip for future brides

When I picked mine up they popped it in a bag for free. But the hanger was a bit rubbish. Not a big deal, my Mum then made me a snazzy one, but I would have thought a nice hanger and a body bag for it would be standard things a shop should supply. Afterall the dresses aren't cheap. And small details like that will be the difference between you recommending them to a friend or not.

When I went in for my fitting I saw someone else's dress ready to be picked up, which was in a duvet cover. Apparently that's standard practice for the shop, so my guess is I'm not getting a bag either, although nothing has been mentioned to date.
