A little - or a lot - of help please...

LozzaGB, 2 May, 2012 at 20:35 Posted on Honeymoons & Getting Married Abroad 0 12

Hi All,

My partner and I are thinking of getting married abroad, and looked at various countries... but are no where near deciding on where we want to do it. Its becoming more like a chore looking through the many many sites selling their packages. So my question is, if you were in our shoes with the following 'criteria' what advice would you give?

We have a budget of £3k for the wedding ceremony, reception, food, flowers and transport to and from.

Approx 30 guests

A 4 yr old little boy

A few scardy cat guests who do not like flying, so looking for somewhere with a max 5 hour flight.

Ladies and chaps of hitched.... Can you help me??

Many thanks in advance Smiley smile

    Hi,

What time of year are you thinking about, as obviously it can be very hot in some countries in July & August which maybe too hot for you & a 4 year old. Is there anywhere you have been on holiday that is special & that you both love? We are getting married in Lindos in Sept but we have been going there for the last 6 years so know it well & love it. This also gave us the advantage in that we knew it would be right as we have seen the chaple & were able to try out lots of restaurants when we were there last year in order to choose the perfect one. I think it would be very hard to pick somewhere if you had not been, I mean you would never just book somewhere in the UK without going 1st. We have a wedding planner who offered a great package & was very upfront about the legal fee's for the country, this is one thing you have to watch as some countries required lots of documents which can add up. I'd say it's costing us about £350 in legal fees for Greece so don't forget to add these on. Make sure you know what the packages include, some people are happy to book the wedding with a Tour operator who do packages & often look cheaper but check they include what you need, Personally I'd never do that as would not feel safe with them but it's an individual opinion.

Maybe have a look at Greece, Cyrpus all within 5 hours.

    All the best

    Hi Fawny,

Funnily enough we were looking at Greece - well Rhodes really - in great detail as it was the island that ticked all the right boxes. Plenty of Hotels of all ratings for guests, villas, nightlife for those that wanted it, and calm restuarants for those that didnt. Seemed like an all round winner, but I just felt like I had looked at everything a million times and it became more of a chore, than a pleasure.

We had enquired at the usual tour operators, but found that they were charging quite extortionate fees compared to the more local companies in Rhodes. But then you have the dilema of dealing with a foreign company... aaaarghhh! Stressful and I havnt even booked anything.

Could I ask who you went with over there?

We were thinking September/October time as well. Out of the immediate season and heat for that area. But obviously if we went to another country it could change. We holidayed in Turkey recently, which was our first proper holiday abroad just us. I really really enjoyed it! Everywhere else we have been has been either mainland spain, Florida for a friends wedding and Malta for a friends wedding. So Im thinking Turkey or Rhodes.

Any one else got any advice?

    Lauren xx

Turkey may seem a cheaper option to be honest as they arent in the eurozone, im getting married on a greek island and it is pretty pricey, but it depends on your guests and the package you opt for, i am having 30 guests also and at 40 Euro per head for the food for the reception that is lyk 1200 euro, and my wedding package is then around 2000. If you select say maybe three countries you like the sound of as you have mentioned rhodes and turkey and then google wedding planning companies in both countries finf a few which like the look of and maybe contact them tell them exactly what you want and then you can compare the prices. You can even try like thomas cook and tompson to see what they can do for you, as you can sometimes get a free wedding with a hotel if you have a good number of guests etc... and then for flowers n that you could also take silk flowers over with you and if are having a hotel wedding you wont really need any transport, there are many things they can usually offer to bring the price down, if you tell them your budget they can generally find something to suit it. Good luck! xx xx xx

    Hi,

We are using Karen from Lindos Weddings www.lindosweddings.com. Karen is wonderful & has been amazing & we have not even had the wedding yet but we know we are in safe hands. Karen owns the company with her husband & they are english so no problems on that front. They are always there for you, they have excellent reviews from previous customers, just look at their facebook page. They have a wedding package that is £700 I think & you can add extras but there is no pressure to do so. They are very helpful even just on initial advise, so you could always just drop her a line, they always come back within 48hours as a max. I understand what Kayels is saying about the euro but to be honest we find Rhodes to be quiet reasonable maybe Santorini is more expensive, I don't know. There will be 15 of us in total, when we first announced what we were doing we had 30 people but when push came to shove it dropped so you may not get as many people as you expect.

    Good luck

Thanks girls, you have helped loads Smiley smile

I think I will give the 'narrowing down' by looking at another country as well as Rhodes and Turkey a go. You know when you feel a bit overwhelmed with it all? Well it was getting to that point!

Fawny, I may give them an email I do remember a company called lindos weddings. I havnt really gotten to the point of actually getting in contact yet. Was just running around all the different countried thinking - good god, there are way too many places to think of!

    Thank you both again.

    Hi,

Why not try Jersey? We have some great hotels that can cater for weddings of all budgets. I can think of one right now that is next to the beach and would be ideal for the 4 year old. I am a advertiser on hitched so you can check me out if you need any help. It's only a short flight to Jersey as well.

Another that recommends Lindos Weddings and Karen and Laurence. They planned our wedding in 2007 and were brilliant. Did every little detail and are genuinely lovely people. In fact I've just contacted them about planning a renewal there next year. We married at St Paul's Bay in Lindos which is a beautiful place. It was much better value getting married there than here (we had started planning a wedding here but the costs were spiralling out of control!).

Yes Karen & Laurance are amazing we have our wedding booked with them for Sept. Laurance phoned me on Tuesday as our reception venue Kyma in Pefkos has done the dirty on us because someone else has asked for it & there is more in their wedding party than ours so Kyma has cancelled our booking even though it was made in Sept 2011. K & L are furious but they have pulled all the stops out to find us another venue that is going to be even better.?

Wow, how rude of them! We had Odysseia in Lindos itself. Was just what we wanted, we had the courtyard with the lemon tree and all the mosaic floor. Loved it. I actually watched our DVD yesterday as I felt all nostaglic about looking at wedding bits again. My daughter thought it was hilarious.

    Hi Pip,

Yes it is bad of them we were so upset & in a state. However as I said karen has been amazing & looks like we are now going to have it at the Melenos? & it's going to be so amazing, so it's kyma lose, we will certainly be never steping foot in there again. We tried Odysseia last year & it is beautiful, will definatly be eating there again this year.
