a picnic suggestion..

hellandglory, 13 March, 2015 at 12:21 Posted on Planning 0 19

OH and i have a lot to thank picnics for - our first date, our celebration of finding out we were pregnant, and when we split up briefly he came and surprised me with a picnic and we sat and talked and worked everything out and here we are...so it just seemed right that for our wedding breakfast we have a picnic. (only it will be indoors, inside the lighthouse we are marrying in)

In short, we're a family that loves a good picnic - think jam or ham sandwiches, crisps and fruit.
We're looking to step this up a little, but not a lot for the big day - we were thinking adding some cheese and crackers, pasta salad/tomato pasta.
We have no idea which sandwiches to include..maybe a cheese and pickle? Though we do love our ham or jam...

I think i'm just over thinking this all too much!

Anyway, i'd like a few more suggestions for the food we could include please...

Haha! I think I know your venue - don't be caught by the tide!

I was originally going to have an indoor picnic all served in big baskets for each table of eight to share - it would have been five baskets in total. I even got as far as looking at menus, but (fortunately) hadn't booked anything before we changed our plans.

We were starting with a pimms reception in the garden served in teacups (hence my user name!)

For the posh-nic we were planning cheese scones, scones with cream, a big raised crust picnic pie per basket (something like chicken and ham), charcuterie, sausage rolls, mini quiches and three or four salads - potato, crisp green, and pasta/pesto. All along with some sandwiches - ham, egg mayo, smoked salmon. We were then going to have a 'village fete' type table with mini victoria sponge cakes - oh, and a cheese stack with crackers and chutney. All on lovely vintage china.

I half wish I was still doing that! I hope there are a few ideas in there.

Mmm.. I love a posh picnic! Olives, posh meats, fresh bread, cheeses etc, yum. I am also obsessed with sausage rolls and cocktail sausages! Love sparkling teacups ideas (and love that I now understand your username!) particularly the big pie and scones. Did you know that places like sainsburys do big food platters? They do sandwich ones (I'm a prawn cocktail or ham and cheese girl) and they do things like samosas etc too.

I've just had a look at the m&s party food range - got some good ideas and i'm now bloody starving haha.

We want to keep it fairly simple, with the picnics being served individually in something like this:

I love a pork pie at a picnic and some pickled onions! Maybe some cheese straws/bread stick and dips. You could just serve a fresh loaf of bread with different cheese, meat or fish and chutneys and your guests can make there own sandwich. Sounds fab what ever you choose to put in! X

This is such a lovely idea. Having read this thread I am now starving!

I also love mini pork pies and cocktail sausages. Did you want something sweet too? Whenever we have a picnic we have those mini boxes of flapjacks, brownies, chocolate rolls etc that you can get in Tesco. Or M&S if you're feeling posh Smiley winking

ETA - I've just read this back and basically my advice is just have mini everything, lol.

Thank you for all the suggestions! at the moment each box will have

    • 2 1/4 of a sandwich - 2 different flavours (we're going to order a platter from marks and spencer)
    • mixed veg crisps
    • pasta salad
    • mixed leaf salad
    • a mini pork pie
    • a couple mini sausage rolls
    • 2 crackers with a miniature cheese
    • a piece of fresh fruit
    • a bakewell tart
    • a bottle of fentimans

when i type that it seems like quite a lot - what do you think?

It sounds lovely, and people can swap out anything they don't fancy packed lunch style. I love it!

We're having a summer fete/picnic theme, we're doing lots of bread, meat, cheese and crackers so people can make up there own choice sandwhich, they'll also be chutneys, salads, quiches, sausage rolls and loads of cakes and biscuits.

Ooh, i can't bare scotch eggs! I might look into it though since they're apparently a favourite haha.

The room we are in is pretty small so we can't really have a help/make yourself - its the room we're marrying in and tables are quickly being put up when photos are being taken outside.

I actually need to find someone to put up the tables...hmm.

I like carrot and cucumber sticks - nice and refreshing on a warm day :-)

Wow, that made me sound boring...

Sounds awesome - just check that you don't have any guests who are gluten intolerant or coeliac so you can swap theirs out for gluten free stuff and give them an alternative to the sandwiches - I don't know if it's just me but gluten free bread always tastes like cardboard/sawdust to me (I'm not allowed wheat).

At a picnic I love to have a tasty salad - usually quinoa with lemon juice coriander and mint and cucumber, tomato (like a cous cous salad basically), a green salad, some nibbly things like sundried tomatoes olives and artichokes, vegetable sticks with dips/homous etc.

We have put a dietary requirements section on the RSVP cards Smiley smile

At the moment we have this to stick onto the side of the lunch boxes(design is the same as our invitations), obviously its not a final draft as we have a fair bit of time yet, but just a rough idea.

We'll be having little jars of crudites on the tables, with hummus and maybe some chutneys as well.
