A productive afternoon's favour making *flash*

ajdown, 18 July, 2011 at 16:31 Posted on Planning 0 56

Well, we planned some months ago that, on our holiday this week, we'd sort out putting the favours together. Just as well, as it's been a dreadful few days of weather and it doesn't look like it's going to change in the near future. I don't mind listening to the sea but I'd rather not be listening to it on the roof.

Anyway, we're now 1/3 through our task so i thought I'd flash the first 50 as I know people like that sort of thing.

The basic ingredients - health (sugared almonds), wealth (a mint), happiness (love hearts), longevity (long life milk - a long story), fertility (aster seeds, September's flower)

My b2b rolling some labels on the love hearts

Close up of the labels I made.

Me dividing up the seeds into 140 small bags.

My b2b tying the ribbon and label around the top of the bags.

Sit back and admire the handywork - the first 50.

A close up of one assembled favour.

Hope you like. We'll be finishing the other 100 during the rest of the week, weather not permitting us doing anything more exciting.

    Great work!

Just wanted to check something before you do another 100 - should the sticker not read 'Thank you for sharing with us our special day/Thank you for sharing our special day with us' or something similar? The 'sharing with us on our special day' sounds like you want them to hand over some of their love hearts to you?

Fiddly but necessary - with less than 2 months to go it's one of a few 'big tasks' that's still outstanding we wanted to get out of the way whilst we were on holiday regardless of the weather, as we can either sit inside and listen to the sea on the roof, or out on the decking and whilst enjoying the sunshine.

I'm doing the "assembling and sticking the elastic band round it to hold it together" whilst she's doing the label, ribbon and flowers - I don't have the patience for that bit. It's a bit like stuffing envelopes at work, once you get into the routine you can 'zone out' a bit and just get on with it.

CB - I think it says thank for sharing IN our special day.

AJ- they look fab! I wouldn't have the patience to do that lot. Don't suppose you fancy assembling 100+ pink boxes & sticking roses & ribbon on them?

I suppose it could be read that way but as we've got no way of making any more labels whilst away, and we've already done the 150 rolls before we started assembling the complete packs, it'll have to do as is Smiley smile But if people want to share their love hearts I'm quite happy for them to do so - I like 'em ? However, a lot of people coming will be Christians and the context of 'sharing' as it's worded will probably make sense to them as it did to me when I did them.

Panda, not sure we'll be wanting to take commissions though... not enjoying them *that* much!

Ah, I was reading the tag on the completed favour bag not the little labels to go on the Love Hearts etc. Perhaps I need to get my eyes re-tested!

Hunter green and ivory are our two main colours - initially it started as an accident that I put the ivory organza on the outside rather than the inside of the green organza, and we put them side by side and thought they actually looked rather good that way so rather than undo it we've purposely gone for half green/white and half white/green.

We're also using the same idea on our 'chair ends' with green and ivory bows alternating up each side.

The organza bag kits (the 2 colours, flowers, ribbon and some little dishes we decided against using) came from http://cameofavours.co.uk/ as 'all in one value kits' which is enough to do 50 favours in colours of your choice for £16.00 which is 32p each plus whatever you want to put in them.

    Cracking job date twin!

I love the idea and the sentiment behind it. Now if only I could find the motivation to do that!

I really like them Smiley smile Seeing them as a big pile helps show the amount of work that goes into making favours!!

I agree with the others who've said the colours look great together - well chosen Smiley smile

We're on holiday on the south coast. This is the view from our door. This is our motivation today.

It's July and we have the heating on, and it has hardly stopped raining all day. The sea keeps coming over the wall.

Nice one, AJ! Maybe I should hire (or kidnap, as I am skint right now) you to help with the seeds in our favours?? Have a soft spot for the colour as we're having Hunter Green too...

If it's any consolation, it's the same in Leeds, West Yorkshire. Electric blanket was even on last night!! It's cold and rainy and feels like November not July!

Hmm, locked away with boy in a cottage being lashed by Bronte-esque rain, wind and the sea...I can think of something way more fun than making favours, although admittedly, the photos might not be as pretty...?

Seriously, fab. I have always liked your idea for favours and they look great all bundled up like that. Well done.

They come in the packs in bunches of 12 - I think they're made of paper, on wire stems. If you take the bunches apart, then twist together a green one and an ivory one, we then just push them into the middle of the bunch at the top of the bag where the ribbon goes round, and they stay there perfectly. We might just add a little 'health and safety announcement' before we give them out so the little ones don't take them and start eating them...

Glad people are liking the favours so far! It is a labour intensive task and even if we charged minimum wage I don't think most people would want to pay what it takes! The first 50 took 4 hours more or less. Best advice is once you have your colours chosen and main things selected (venue, date, tog etc) look at getting your favours sorted, buy the bits, and then spread out the work over six months or more when you have half an hour spare here or there. It'll be much less labour intensive.

gsijane, we're at Selsey West Sands (www.bunnleisure.co.uk). Apologies everyone but I've just been over to the beach and taken this picture, more or less pointing in the same direction as yesterday's picture. That's the Isle of Wight in the distance. Low tide at the moment too so you can even see the beach, and the sea is the right side of the wall this morning.

We may well take advantage of what looks like will be a good day and do something more 'holidayish' today but come back to the favours later.

Hi! I love the idea of putting all those things together.. it shows you have spent a lot of time and thought in sharing your day with others. I am doing similiar, with organza bags. We are having a beach wedding, so I have saved my best collected shells over the last year and wrapped a few each in tissue paper, i have the love hearts too, love them!, some chocolate silver hearts, and I was going to put a lottery ticket in too. Names on a wooden heart tied on. We have 50 ish guests though, not 150!!

We thought it was a good idea to take some photos of the favour making, as we can put those in our album photobook that we'll be making when we recieve our official photographs.

So many times I see wedding pictures that start on the morning of the wedding, and the usual shoes in box / dress hanging up / applying lip gloss / drinking champagne at 8am sort of shots, but that's just the wedding day itself - there are many months, if not several years, of preparation that goes on before the actual day itself, and we'd like to have some of those times recorded in our album too.

Only made 25 so far today, got distracted by some sunshine. But we're half way there and have at least four days left on our holiday Smiley smile

I am jealous of the beach shot - although I am overlooking the Croquet lawn of the manor house I work in, with the smell of a BBQ drifting via the window - yummy!

I am also doing the same re:memory recording, not in the same way, as I have a kind of guest book I am using as a kind of memory album, but I know i'll cherist it.
