A question for cake bakers/decorators

Miss-Incognito, 18 November, 2008 at 10:15 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 3

I normally post on BT but thought this is more for OT.

It's my husband's birthday and my 2.5 year old wanted to bake him a blue cake with pink icing. I bought blue food colouring but I've ended up with a green sponge mix due to the butter and eggs. I don't know why I didn't foresee this happening. So my poor husband is going to have a green cake with pink icing and gold and silver candles (and that's before Eliza has even seen the sprinkles in the cupboard ?).

If I'm making a coloured sponge in future, how do I make sure I get a true colour?

Thank you.

Did you use colouring paste? Or the wet runny stuff?

    ?

The liquid dye in a bottle. I didn't know you could get paste, is that what I ought to have used?

Oooh yes ? Much more density of colour and you only need a teeny tiny bit. I get mine from a local specialist shop, but you can buy online. Loads of colours too.

Great, thank you. I just picked the stuff up in the supermarket yesterday on a bit of a whim "ooo, what colour cake shall we make for Daddy, Eliza?". She took some convincing that black isn't the best colour for a cake, or a birthday card.

I'll have a look online for some paste.
