A question from a wedding guest...

Office Girl, 13 March, 2009 at 12:54 Posted on Planning 0 8

Hello everyone,

I have a quick question, I gat married a couple of years ago and must admit I havent ventured over to this part of hitched in a while, so not sure that I 'know' anyone, but I hope you can help!

I have just had a wedding invite from a friend and she 'politly requests that women do not wear black' ... Actually I have 2 questions, 1) is this a normal type of request, and what reason would you have for requesting? and 2) would this mean that my gorgeous dress that is black and white is off limits?! The only reason I ask is, since having my (gorgeous!) daughter a couple of months ago I am not looking my best and this dress is fabulous and hides the worst bits! And I hate shopping!!

Just to add, I don't mind that she has requested this, it is just not something I considered when getting married!

TIA x

I would assume she just wants a bright looking wedding and that your B+W dress wouldn't be welcomed ?

    Hi there

It could be because she is having black bridesmaids dresses? A few of the ladies on here are having that. I guess it would then look like a very large and diverse wedding party if too many of the guests also wore black. If you're close you could email her a picture of your dress?

It could also just be that she would prefer lots of colour in her photos. Or is superstitious and associates black with funerals.

I would assume she's a bit of a control freak and would respond with your RSVP asking where your clothing allowance for a new frock is? ?

Maybe she's having a black and white theme and the bridesmaids are wearing black and she doesnt want other women to be confused with them? That's the only other thing I can think of...?

Like the post above, its probably that she wants a bright cheerful day with lots of colour! If your dress is maninly black with a bit of white then i'd go for something else. if it's an equal mixture of the two with swirly or geometric patterns then go for it, why not add a bright red corsage with some matching red shoes?

Personally I'd ignore it if it's a black and white dress, as you say you have a young'un and it may not be in your budget to be able to splash out on a new dress.

I think it would be different if it had said 'black tie' so you knew it all had to be formal, what about wearing your black/white dress with a pink sash or corsage on then you won't get mistaken for a BM if that's why she's doing it.

I'd say she's having black bridesmaid dresses. Can you not just call/email her and ask her?

I too think its to do with the association with funerals, also my friend is having a pink theme wedding and has asked for guests to wear pink !

Thank you for your replies, I hadnt thought of the bridesmaid thing, that would make sense ( as does the control freak - but that is why we love her!) I was going to email, but thought I would ask people not involved first!! I am liking the idea of brightening the dress up - I have worn it with red accessories before, will email and check its ok, dont fancy going against the brides wishes!

    Thanks again

ETA the dress is mostly white, but the pattern is black and quite bold - I am rubbish at descrptions!
