A really shallow question re weight loss

Knownowt, 9 April, 2008 at 14:20 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 19

I've had a stomach infection since Sunday and haven't been eating. I've just weighed myself and I've lost 7lb.

Some of this is definitely real weight loss (I'm noticably thinner around my face) but some is presumably just being empty of food. Any idea how much of it might be real weight loss (given that I'm on a diet anyway so will be eating lightly even when I'm well again)?

Sorry for the shallow question. Just trying to find a silver lining in the cloud of illness.

From my experience, it will all be fluids and you'll be back to normal weight in a few days I'm afraid. Though if you're dieting, maybe a pound?

I know it's impossible ? I was just hoping somebody would reply "I lost 10lb when I was ill and it all stayed off" to give me something to cling to in my throwing up misery.

I'd have said maybe half so 3.5lb, but like Nick says, it's as long as piece of string.

If you've been unwsell since Sunday, you will have lost some fat (and probably some lean tissue) along with quite a bit of fluids. The fluids and muscle should come back once you start eating normally again, but there's no reason why the fat would unless you are eating more claories than you burn each day. Oh, and could you please breath on me? I've just spent three weeks living off takeaways, mars bars, biscuits and airline food. Fat. ?

I had a bad throat infection 2 years ago and couldn't eat much. I lost a stone and kept off 7lbs of that.

Oppositely I ate a chinese, kebab and pizza at the weekend and put on 7lbs ?

Usually if I'm ill and lose weight I'll keep it off if I eat sensibly when I get better again

I had food poisoning a few years ago and lost a stone in a week (it really wasn't pleasant) I then went away on holiday for a week but could only eat small amounts and at the end of the week I had only regained 3lbs. I think it all went back eventually, but it took some time and if I had stuck to healthy eating/small portions I think 10lbs of it would have stayed off.

Well, here is my scientific answer. ?

There are c.3,000 calories in a pound of fat. Therefore, if you've eaten nothing for three days and you'd normally eat 2,000 calories a day, you'll have lost 2 pounds of fat. The rest will be water, the normal content of your gut etc.

Ooh, interesting point Sophie. I'd never considered how many calories were in a pound of fat ...

I have wondered how many calories are in a pint of blood so, when I give blood, whether that entitles me to more nice food ?

Professor Sophie is pretty much spot on.

For the first 12-16 hours you'll have been burning circulating glucose then stored glycogen. After that you go on to fat reserves, and your metabolism will have slowed slightly, so my money is on 1.5 lb max.
