A very Scilly wedding- the report.....finally!!

ScillyB2B, 5 July, 2012 at 12:26 Posted on Planning 0 24

Ok so on the approach to our 2 month anniversary I need to put this down before I forget anything! For the many who dont know me, sorry, I wasn't on here too much in the run up to the wedding and needed a break from wedding madness afterwards so havent been on at all since. To those that were wanting to read this- sorry for the wait!!

Ok so here is our slightly different wedding, I'll try and keep it short on words and flash heavy...

Friday 11th May

We awoke in our premier inn and had to leave before breakfast, grabbed my dress from my sister's room and headed down to Penzance docks for our ferry. Mum and Dad had just arrived, then my sis and bro in law and we all jumped around a lot and pointed open mouthed at the sun in the sky (it hadnt stopped raining for several weeks), then Dan's sis, bro in law and niece, parents aunti and cousin arrived and we all climbed aboard!

The crossing wasnt much fun, Danny and I were about the only two not sea sick which made me feel sooooo guilty, but then we started to arrive into the islands which started to make up for things!

We had a lovely lunch in the gardens of our venue and then a bbq in the evening of our lovely cottage. We gave our bridesmaids, my sister and Danny's 2 year old niece their presents- silver charms made on the islands from shells on a necklace and charm bracelet. It was so nice for the 'core' family to get to know each other.

Saturday 12th May

my Grannie and Auntie and 10 of our friends arrived today on boat and plane, I had my hair trial and none of us could believe the weather!!

We then headed down to the beach, had fish and chips and a big game of bride verses groom rounders....brides won!! (with some fairly dodgy scoring manipulation!) It was a really lovely evening with very close friends from different areas of our lives hanging out together!

Quite a nice sunset too!

Sunday 13th May

We had a lovely day out on boats and continuing to enjoy the surprising sunshine!

On the sunday evening we had our 'stag' and 'hen' parties. Danny wasn't keen on this title as he didnt want to be force fed too much alkifrol on the big night before but the boys behaved on their boat trip to the most southerly pub in britain and my girls spoiled me rotten too. It was so odd saying bye bye to him and thinking I would see him until we were GETTING MARRIED!!!

I'd love to know what the boys were laughing at, I love this pic of Danny (3rd from left)

After a lovely evening of gossip and games, the boys came back about 10.30 and I was packed off to bed for an early night...

    Monday 14th May WEDDING DAY

Well, after all that nice weather, we had always known the forecast for monday morning wasnt good. I woke up after a surprisingly good night sleep at 6.30 to heavy clouds but no rain yet. I'd said I would go up to the top flat where mum and dad and sis and bro-in-law were staying at 8 but then heard them moving upstairs and thought...I'm not going to wait it they're up! So I had a quick shower and went upstairs. Well, the reason they were all up was because they were hanging the miles and miles of bunting Hannah and mum had been secretly making. It went round the gardens, in the rooms and then a big one out front:

The wond and rain had started up by then but it said congratulations Amy and Danny. I was so touched.

It didn't bother me as much as I thought it would, the forecast said the sun would come out later and I was clinging to that!

We popped the champagne, had our hair quiffed and preened and I had to give up my hope of walking to the venue and arrange a taxi. Eventually the time had come, we piled in unmbrellas in hand and were driven round to our venue, Juliet's Garden.

The regristrar asked me all the official things and then told me to take a few mins until I was ready. I didn't think I needed to and just wanted to get in there- I felt a bit like a kid shown a Christmas tree then told to wait! I wish I had takn a bit more time with my dad now and settled myself a bit more. But I was just so excited!

The ceremony was amazing, it really was. It just didnt feel real. I have never known so many people cry at a wedding! We had a wonderful personal introduction by the registrar, the Danny's sister read 'The Grumpy DInosaur' a reworked version of Edward Monkton's poem which Danny made all about us. Helene was in floods, Danny was in tears and then I looked round and everyone had tissues out, I think mine were the only dry (ish) eyes in the house! It just felt so unreal! We then had 2 other reading we had modified, Union by Robert Fulgham and an indian blessing. We said the vows we had writen for each other and exchanged our rings we had hand made for each other. Everything just felt so 'us'. We were so pleased afterward when our mums and my grannie said how genuinely they loved it, we knew they had been quietly wishing we had had a church wedding but they all agreed we made te right decision.

The plan had been to have drinks on the terrace and then go down to the beach for photos. It was still raining so we had to have drinks insdie and then had to make the decision to have the photos inside. I was mildly gutted but having too much of a wonderful time for it to really matter.

We had local fizz and real ale and mini scones which were all very very tasty!

Back we went to the cottage for lunch, Danny gave a lovely speech (I did cry then) and we cut the cake:

and then there appeared a light in the sky....

And we were off, beach play ensued for the rest of the afternoon and I was so pleased I had chosen a dress which didnt hold me back from joining in

Then a civilised meal of fillet steak and grilled tiger prawns after our dads said some lovely things, before crashing back at the pad with a wee dram and tunes. aaaand done!!

The following day Dan and I headed off to a v swish hotel on another island for a minimoon and were seen off on the quay by everyone who tied a huge bunch of balloons to our luggage, I threw my bouquet and they all waved us off.

It was all so very wonderful, we felt so lucky to have spent such a lovely time with the people we love.

    Thanks girls!

I went to a wonderful wedding a couple of weeks after ours, it was bigger and more formal (but still not really very big or formal!) and they had loads of games in the grounds outside the marquee, big jenga, coconut shy, table tennis (maybe difficult to get hold of), sack races....great fun! (and yes my friend the bride partook in a sack race!)

I'm going to pick up a few little garden games I think! Although my wedding is in April so it might not be the weather for it but I can always keep them for another time! What's the game where you have to throw hoops over different sticks? Is it hoop-la? Getting married at a golf course so they might not appreciate us having big games on their pristine grass!! lol x

I've had a few holidays sailing round the Scilly's, did you get married on Tresco?

Yeah I think its called hoop-la.

No, we got married on St Mary's, at Juliet's Garden if you know it. The hotel on Tresco has closed recently. We had our minimoon on St Martin's x

I recognise the garden shots, I just couldn't remember which island it was on. Sad about the tresco hotel, I love those islands, lots of happy memories!! Haven't been there for...about 10 years! Must take my OH there some day, he'd love it!

    Wow! What a beautiful wedding!

This is very nostalgic for me. We spent our childhood summers on St Mary's camp site and had SO much fun. My sister moved to St Martins about 4 years ago and got married at St Martin's Hotel, so we not visit at least once a year!

You make a beautiful bride! I always thought how amazing it would be to get married at Juliet's Garden!
