Academic types- help!

Knownowt, 14 July, 2009 at 17:04 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 21

I got my exam results today but I don't understand them ?

I was due to receive them by post this morning but nothing came. My "record of agreed results" has now been posted on the university website.

On it, it lists my marks (71, 73, 72). According to the course handbook, anything over 70 is a distinction- yay!

However, under the "Result" column of the "record of agreed results" doc, it says "P" against each section, presumably for "pass".

Does this mean that I've just got a pass and that the marks therefore don't represent percentages (which is possible) or is such a document likely to list all passes (normal, with commendation, with distinction) simpy as "P"? If the former it's really misleading but I just don;t know how such things work. I've called the course administrator but there's no answer.

There's no key given to the record of agreed results.

Gargh!

What usually happens is that all your marks are taken to a Board of Examiners and they review them and declare whether you've passed or failed. those numbers would be percentages, but your transcript will show "pass" or "fail". Does that help?

Yep they have been ratified etc. So would it just say "pass" or "fail" even if I passed with distinction or commedation?

    Thanks both of you ?

Wowsers! they are fabulous marks. and agree with the others, looks like you've passed with distinction.

whether they should reconsider on the basis you don't understand the results is another matter ?

seriously, well done! you should be very pleased with yourself, you absolutely deserve it ?

When I used to do this (PG management), marks with distinction would say D - for distinction obviously. However, are those marks for just one module, or for more than one? At my uni it was an average of all marks equaling more than 70% would give you a distinction, not just one mark in itself, if that makes sense?

My uni degree result sheet showed my marks, not percentages.

Our marks wouldn't specify the class of each module, just whether it was a pass/fail (or various other must re-sit it options). So it looks like a healthy distinction to me. Well done!

Actually thats a point, often at module level its only pass/fail, and distincions aren't shown until you get your final mark.

Thanks everyone. I suppose I won't know for sure until I get my proper letter (tomorrow, hopefully).

Thanks for the votes of confidence. I'm going to feel like a right twat if I've only scraped through ?

Each unit was out of 16. My final results sheet showed each unit and a mark out of 16 for that unit. No percentages.

Well, based on your marks you've definitely passed at a level of distinction. I seem to remember that on my uni transcript I've got P's next to all my marks which denotes I've passed, and doesn't reflect the level of which I'd passed. The final grade did that.

Well unless each paper was worth more than 100 marks they look like pretty fab results to me either way ?

It did make me giggle that you've done so well and are now asking for interpretation of your results because you don't understand it?

Are these your first year results? I only ask because my first year results were all just marked as pass regardless of my actual percentage mark, the first year was a pass fail rather than graded

Well done you, you big swot?

    Yeah, yeah ?

That happened to me the day the pupillage offers came out - everyone got their letter except me and I had to go to the pub and 'celebrate' not knowing if I had got one or not, horrible!

Congratulations KN! That's really good. Remind me what you are doing again - is it postgrad? I'm sure you've told me but I've been up 28 hours with 2 hours sleep so my brain isn't all it could be right now ?
