Advice about car company

laurafish, 9 February, 2016 at 12:21 Posted on Planning 0 8

Hey all,

Hoping for some advice from anybody who might have had a similar experience or know anyone who has.

Last night the company we booked our wedding car with had a terrible fire and some (not sure if all) of the cars were ruined - from photos we are fairly certain the car we had booked was one of them.

We haven't heard from the company yet and while we did send a message to say we hope they are all okay, we are in no rush to ask them what's next booking wise as they are a family run business from home, and their home was also mostly destroyed. I'm sure they have much more important things to worry about, can't imagine what they are going through and don't want to burden them with questions about our insignificant wedding.

That being said, the wedding is not so insignificant to us. We are wondering if we should look for another company? Our wedding is in mid July so just over 5 months away. I was wondering if anybody knows of a situation like this happening before, and if so do you think they are likely to have got the company up and running (to some degree) by then.

We very much liked the people we met with and the company as a whole and would be happy to keep our booking with them if they would be able to fulfil it, but also if it's unlikely that they will, we obviously need to start looking at other options.

Just wondering what is best for us to do right now, without pestering the people who have much bigger things to deal with.

Any advice or experience would be great Smiley smile Thanks!

My OH is an insurance loss assessor so deals with these sort of insurance claims on a daily basis. It's possible that their insurance will deal with replacing the vehicles fairly swiftly as otherwise they will not only have to deal with that but also loss of earnings claim as well. That said they won't pay anything if they are not adequately insured or until then fire has been investigated to show they were not in any way negligent.

I would like to think the company will contact all their clients soon to advise what's happening but if they don't I'm not sure what to suggest other than you contact them to say your sorry about the fire and do you need to find another supplier for x y z.

Obviously you have a contract with them so dnt want to pay out for this one and a replacement. Sorry I cant suggest anything more helpful than contacting them.

Given the devastation you suggest I would think about finding something else, at least put the "feelers" out about possible availability.

If they were vintage cars then they will not be able to be replaced quickly, if they were not vintage then maybe quickly. If they are in a position to carry on then they may know someone else in the business that they can borrow a vintage car from

They may soon save your angst and tell you themselves that they can no longer provide your car once they have had time to gather their thoughts.

I would imagine that one of their priorities will be contacting their upcoming clients and letting them know what's happened/how it will affect future bookings etc. I'm self-employed and if my house burnt down, assuming I still had a phone to get my emails, I'd be emailing my regular clients and anyone who had booked in with me to let them know when I expected to be able to work again.

On the basis that they may not be sorted by July (insurance takes such a long time to sort out!), I would certainly be researching other companies if I were you. I wouldn't make a booking yet, but do make enquiries as to availability.

Thanks guys, that is what I was thinking. It was a vintage car so I was expecting it would be much more difficult to replace.

I will start making some enquiries to see what else is available, and hopefully hear from them soon.

    Thanks again for the responses

    Hiya

I think I know which company you're talking about. If it is, his daughter has posted on Facebook re getting in touch if you have a booking. If you haven't seen it pm me and I can try to send you a link.

Pretty sure it is - we rang them and they were just taking details of who had bookings and said they would be getting in touch with us this week to explain what happens now.

You may have seen the situation got worse for them - it's such a horrendous situation Smiley sad

At least you will have an answer this week and on a positive they haven't immediately said they can't fulfill any bookings. Fingers crossed for you. X

I did a little facebook stalking and his daughter has said that at the moment he's saying he doesn't want to replace the cars as he's too upset - completely understandably, I think I would be the same.

But we have also seen that they've had lots of offers of help from other companies, so I'm thinking maybe they will do that for any current bookings but not take new ones.

Anyway, we should find out soon!
