Advice desperately needed, I really want to help my sis.

BridesmaidBee, 14 June, 2008 at 15:20 Posted on Planning 0 6

My sister is getting married this year and all has been going well until a family crisis in the last couple of weeks. Our Nan was helping to pay for the reception but since she's now very poorly after having a stroke my sister has said she will posphone until they can afford to pay it themselves as she doesn't want to stress nan out with affording payments/meeting deadlines etc etc.

They have postphoned before for different reasons (surprise baby lol) and I know that even though she's putting on a brave face she will be gutted at having to put it off again, especially as the wedding is literally months away this time. Also there is the worry that if it's put off again then nan might not be with us to see it :-(

I want to help them raise some money towards their wedding in nans place but how can i get together an extra grand in such a short space of time? I have my mortgage/own children and household to pay for so can't really take much from my monthly wages to go towards it. I've thought about carboot sales and ebay but beyond that my mind is a blank lol

Any ideas gratefully recieved. Time is short and i'm desperate to save my sis some heartache and give her the day she's dreamed of because she deserves it so much.

Meant to say that there is no way nan is now going to be able to help. She is showing little improvement :-( It really is a case of finding that little extra!

I know you have mentioned car boots but I just wanted to say I can really recommend them. I've done quite a few in the past and at one car boots I raised over £200. I know its not a thousand like your looking for, but its a good start.

I will keep thinking for you hun and my thoughts are with your family and your nan.

£200?? Thats awesome! I don't know why but I had an idea of making £50 through carboots lol shows I don't know much! Will definately give that a go then as I have loads of stuff I can clear out and it's all for a good cause.

    Thankyou :-) Bee x

Hi, a tip for the car boot sale, take any old clothes you or your family have as that's something that sold really well at my car boot sale, even things that I thought were ready for the bin! Sets of smellies that you have left over from Christmas go really quickly too. You can sell just about anything and it's quite theraputic getting rid of all your junk!

Something I'm doing to raise money towards my wedding fund is digging out any jewellery that myself or h2b no longer wear and taking it into the jewellers to sell. Not sure how much this will make but no point it sitting in a jewellery box unworn forever.

Could you ask your mum, dad, any other close relatives to make a small donation each towards the sum you're trying to raise?

Have a look on Google under something like "ways to make extra cash" and have a look through to see what things you could do.

Good luck anyway, sounds like a challenge but I'm sure you'll do it. Let us know how you get on.

I tell you what else sells really well at car boots - baby bits.

Me and mum went through a stage of buying job lots of baby clothes off the amazing e*bay and tripling our profit. Is worth investing if you have a little to start off with.

I have made loads of money selling off bits at car boots too, even selling my collectable stuff on ebay.

I have put myself down for all the overtime going at work and even the OH is working all his rest days to pay for the wedding.

E*bay can also be good for raising cash - then take any leftovers to a car boot.

    Couple of tips:

    • Time your auctions so they finish on Sunday evenings.
    • Don't be tempted to put batches of stuff like books or DVDs on there - list everything seperately (I know it's more time consuming, but it's worth it).
    • Don't forget to set a reserve price on stuff that you want to make sure sells for a reasonable amount.

    Good luck!
