Advice from cat types...?

Arquard, 14 June, 2012 at 16:38 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 7

Sorry to have gone AWOL for ages then come back for advice! Anyone in the know about cats who could give me tips would be very much appreciated though.

My ginger tom cat keep injuring a patch just above his ear. It heals then he clears off for a couple of days and comes back with a wound and the fur all matted with blood again. It must have happened 3 or 4 times now. He's not an aggressive cat at all and always backs off if other cats in the area come into our garden, but there is one big mean moggy who seems to target him quite a lot and chases him around. I suspect that this recurring injury is something to do with said mean moggy, but I'm not sure how to stop it happening over and over. I haven't yet had him done (it's on the agenda, just haven't got round to it yet) but as I said before, he isn't the aggressor anyway so I don't know that having him done will make a difference.

What can I do for my poor manky mog?

My cats are both neutered and indoor cats so I'm not sure I can help much! But I'll try.

Could you try keeping him in for a few days to give the wound time to heal, and so he can't be attacked by the other cat?

If the other cat is a Tom and you get him neutered, it might all calm down as he won't be seen as a threat any more.

Both of these obviously easier said than done with a new bubba though!

Our cat got a bad scratch on her face from another cat, it got infected and she ended up with absess. The vet gave her antibiotics, but advised if it happened again to clean it with warm salt water straight away. Might be worth bathing it with some cotton wool soaked in salt water? Oh, and keep him in until it heals.

He may need to wear a spaceman collar for a bit. Cats scratch themselves behind their ears alot, you know, the starting a motorbike scratch, so he is probably continually knocking the scab off every time it gets a bit itchy. I would keep him in too untill it heals. Try bathing it in salt water if he lets you too.

He's a very outdoorsy cat and gets agitated if I try to keep him in. He's happy for me to bathe his ear though (that's what I've done before). Will get on at H about organising getting him done then, see if that keeps him out of mischief!

Cat person you say?! Im here!

It will be the fact he is scrapping to get the laydeez attention. We lost ours for days on end before we got him done. He also came back with a shredded face where he had been fighting. Remove the lil dudes bits n bobs and he will be fine.

WEES just want to reiterate about getting him castrated, even if he is not an agressive cat he most certainly will have fathered lots of unwanted kittens and possibly spread diseases - cats can be carriers without showing symptoms.

You can keep it in the cage for a long time. when the big mean moggy goes other place, then let it out.
