Advice needed from anyone working in a clothing shop!

Victoria030384, 28 April, 2013 at 09:17 Posted on Planning 0 9

Strange situation but my mum and I have both ended up buying the same item for my wedding without realising it! I ordered it online and she bought it from the shop. However by the time we realised it was too late to return the online version and now she cannot find the reciept for the other one! I was going to take the one back to the shop and see if I could swap it for something different but now I think I might have taken the tag off that one by mistake instead of the one ordered from the net. Both came from the same shop (a department store) and are identical so if I return it to the shop will it be a problem? I thought not but then a friend mentioned that items might have a totally individual barcode or item number despite them being the same item. Anyone know if this is the case?

Take it to the shop, with any evidence you can garner (bank statement for payment?). They might only give credit, but worth a go? As for individual bar codes. Big companies don't generally have codes unique to stores. And certain chains you can return internet purchases to the store / other stores (though admittedly if you don't have a receipt going to the store it was purchased from is a help to the staff).

Unfortunately she paid for it with cash so nothing other than the reciept to prove it! I guess a credit would be better than nothing I'm just wondering if they will know its the one ordered online rather than bought in the shop. Its a 60 mile round trip to the shop so trying to guage whats likely to happen before I waste a long journey!

I used to work in a shop years ago, and we would accept it back and give a credit note if there was no receipt, you will get back whatever the price is now though, so if its in the sale you will only get the sale price back with no receipt

As GoggleyB says. If there is no proof of purchase, then they may exchange or give a credit note for its current value but generally you wouldn't receive a refund without proof of purchase i.e., the receipt. M & S take things back that are bought on line to the shops and I think that's pretty much standard with most department stores.

I work for a retailer and items do have an individual code, so using a receipt to return a different garment even though they are identical in size may not work. Items have individual numbers to combat fraud.

Whoever said you are only entitled to the current price without proof of purchase is also correct, so if it has been on sale between the time you bought it and now, you will only be entitled to the sale price - and you won't get a refund, only a credit note.

I don't think the people in the shop will argue with you when you bring it back (or they shouldn't), but I wouldn't expect to get a cash refund. You would probably get a credit note or refund card of some sort.

Do you have an email as proof of purchase for the one bought online?

Not clear on whether you've found the receipt or not.... If you haven't got a receipt anyway, they wouldn't know the unique number of the item, however - they definitely would only give you the price it's now at (if it's in the sale) and at best would give you a credit note/store voucher. You'd need to check though as I know some stores now request proof of payment because of people returning stolen items.

If you do have a receipt, you should be able to return the item without a tag as long as it's in an unworn condition as they don't always have tags/keep tags.

Can you ring the store's customer services? If no receipt, ring and ask if you could return an item with a tag without a receipt as you've lost it and paid with cash, if you have receipt, tell them the tag has fallen off but it's unworn will that be ok and see what they say - saves you a trip.

Great advice thanks guys! I am not expecting the cash back without the reciept - a credit note would be fine I just dont want to end up with two of a £130 item! Will give customer services a ring and see what they say!

The retailer I work for uses the individual codes and the system would pick up if it's been purchased online or in store. Regardless, you would still get a credit note or exchange. You would also get the price you paid rather than the current selling price because the system would also know whether or not it was purchased in the sale.
