Advice on this dress....

AmyandRoss, 23 June, 2014 at 20:54 Posted on Planning 0 30

I'm trying to pull my finger out a bit and I've started browsing some dresses on the Internet.

I've stumbled across this which I've fallen in love with.... I just need some help with pricing. Any idea what end of the ridiculous scale it would fall under? I'm hoping it is the lower end as that's doable but the higher end really is not an option.

It's Vera Wang - Gemma.

Here is a picture. Any help would be much appreciated.

Thank you. X

I don't know for sure, but imagine all Vera Wangs are at the top end of the scale! Of course it depends how far up the scale you are willing to go. You could always try to track down a second hand one on preloved. Gorgeous dress btw!

All I can find on the net is their scale is £4000-£18000!!! So I was hoping it was right at the lowest part of that. I simply love it. Xx

Just google the name of the dress, and you might find a web page that has the answer.

When I googled a dress I was looking for, when I looked at the image results, I also found a photo of it taken at a wedding fayre where the price was clearly displayed on a big label. So check the 'images' as well as web hits.

I think David's Bridal sell some Vera Wang dresses, so they're not necessarily ridiculous prices.

Just double checked David's Bridal, and there are Wang dresses on there, with prices. Might give you an idea.

    Cheapest is £675 on there.

Bulk making, bulk selling = cheaper. Designers often do more 'affordable' ranges for high street shops. I think this is the bridal equivalent, LOL !

The ones costing £4000 to begin with won't be circulated in big numbers. They will be the type of elite dresses that show up on catwalks.

I don't think more money equates to a nicer dress though. If £4k isn't your ideal price range, I'm sure you can get a VERY similar dress, same shape, fabric etc for a lot less money, that might actually be nicer in the flesh.

I'd go try on something with a similar shape and if you love it, try preloved or eBay; US seems to have a lot more VW and the like for sale

    Good luck!

I've tried a few fishtails on and it's definitely the shape for me. Hubby to be said I can have it if it's more along the £4k range but no more. I've not seen anything like that really. I love it. Xx

When I googled it before I think it said it's a 2012 dress, so you may struggle to find it available anywhere in an actual store to get a close up look.

There are a few on Preloved UK, plus a size 10 available to hire, so maybe see if there's one being sold near to you that you can go and try on?

Vera Wangs are proper bo designer, be prepared to get yo cash out. I have also seen Chinese tailor versions of Vera Wangs- so that's an option but obviously it's not the same Smiley smile

Ian Stuart's Flowerbomb is similar; might be worth trying on?

A perfect wedding dress. Very beautiful. Your love with the dress seems to be true. The dress pattern is very good. The wedding dress shops in London nowadays are following the breech gown pattern, famous in Paris. It seems they are highly influenced by Milan and Paris fashion.

What makes you think you look terrible?

The VW dress you've posted is the same style so would feel the same no?

The back of it comes up really high on the original one. Although I'm a size 6-8 it makes me look like I have lots of back fat haha.

But you would have tried on a sample, your actual dress could be altered to fit better and maybe even lower?

I've tried two samples on, one of which was the right size. Some people have had the back lowered but I didn't like the look of it in the pictures. It really shortens the torso at the back and because I'm only 5ft, it would make me look dumpy.

    Xx

Is the vera wang one a different shape at the back then?

Even if the sample was the right size, everyone is a different shape so some minor alterations could make all the difference?

I believe this dress is approx. £5000 without extras like the belt. They have it in Vera Wang bridal in central London, I previously went to look at it but didn't like it as much up close. It is not a made to measure dress as is the cheaper end of the Vera Wang price scale and they just order it in the nearest size and then alter it- something I didn't like considering the price.

Well I am sad to lose you as a dress twin Smiley sad

I was going to send you a photo of my dress after it's been altered but the seamstress has altered mine wrongly! She's taken it in too much at the bust and not enough at the waist and hips, looks awful. Wedding is in 2 weeks so hopefully get it sorted tomorrow night. Vera wang dress is gorgeous! X
