Advice re evening food

firefairy, 5 April, 2013 at 10:56 Posted on Planning 0 17

I was hoping for some advice about our choice of food for the evening. (Both my OH and I are vegetarian so we are having a veggie only menu). This is what we originally had:

Selection of cheese and fresh fruit with biscuits,

bread and butter

Sour cream and chive dip with a selection of crudités (celery, cucumber, carrots, peppers and cauliflower florets)

Hummus with pitta fingers

Guacamole and tomato salsa with nachos

Wedding cake

However, it has come to my attention that several of our friends actually don't like cheese! (of any descrption) And we have the odd vegan attending. My question is, if you don't like cheese do you think there is still enough choice for the evening? If not, are there any suggestiong you could make to add to the above as an extra choice?

If it helps, here is the food we are having after the main ceremony (we are having an informal affair in my grandfather's garden with a veggie BBQ style wedding breakfast)

Halloumi and mushroom skewers,

Stuffed peppers,

Carrot and sesame burgers with lemon yoghurt dressing,

Tikka skewers (new potatoes, red peppers and red onion in a tikka marinade

Hot and spicy sweet potatoes

Corn on the cob

Wild rice, mushroom, green bean and walnut salad with a walnut oil dressing

Couscous salad with roasted vegetables

Thai noodle salad

Shar`s coleslaw (with red and white cabbage)

Mixed salad with a balsamic dressing on the side

Selection of buns, bread and butter

White chocolate and pistachio cheesecake

Fresh strawberries with meringues and mascarpone cream

Lemon Tart

Thanks!

As a non-veggie who doesn't like cheese (unless it's melted), I would really struggle to find enough to fill me up. In the evening, I would only be eating some fruit, bread and butter, and a few stick of carrot. Is it a cold buffet only or could you have some hot food? Some kind of potato would be nice, boiled with some butter and herbs or something, gorgeous hot and still nice cold. What about plain or veggie pizza? Not very fancy, but lovely hot or cold and cheeseless pizza is still pretty tasty.

My Boy is cheese-phobic carnivore. He'd eat the non-cheese things happily (apart from the crudités), but he'd probably eat quite a lot of it......

Could you add some more carbs/protein? Maybe some spicy Mexican rice with beans (to go with the nachos etc).

There doesn't seem to be that much really, and if you don't like cheese there isn't anything to put in the buns to make a sandwich. How about adding a pasta and rice dish? And maybe egg mayo or something for sandwiches?

We are having a very similar evening meal to you: mostly cheese with fruit, cake and bread, but are providing mushroom pate for vegans, meaty p[ate and cold cuts for non-cheese eaters.

Would a mushroom (or any other vegan alternative) pate work for your vegan/non-cheese friends?

Thanks for the replies so far! I do agree that if you don't like cheese theres not much, which is why I need some help! Its going to be cold only in the evening. I just find it difficult to think of things as I LOVE cheese, and a lot of my veggie stuff includes it. The only thing I could come up with was a vegetarian pate to replace the cheese?

Liking the idea of a mexicany bean salad and potatoes though. Any more thoughts?

I should also probably add, that we have no separate evening guests. So everyone will have eaten at the main breakfast.

I think you definitely need something else in the evening. I really like cheese, but I like good cheese in low quantities. As cheese is high in fat I don't like to eat too much of it, so when I eat a heavily cheese laden buffet I always go home feeling hungry because I can't bring myself to eat too much cheese.

How about having some more cous cous salad in the evening. Or just a green leaf salad to go with the cheese? How about some olives for people to nibble on? What about something like vegetarian scotch eggs. I am not sure if you can buy these, but I know you can make them and they are really yummy.

Also, have you thought about providing a desert buffet. Most deserts are vegetarian so you could have quite a wide variety and there are plenty of vegan dessert options too.

I know they may be considered a bit old-fashioned but vol-au-vents can be filled with various fillings? I personally love cheese,so would be in my element !

How about a couscous salad and some antipasti like chargrilled peppers/artichokes/onions/olives or some bruscetta with assorted toppings?

As a vegetarian, I have to say that your BBQ meal sounds bloody wonderful, possibly the best I've seen here. I'd be in heaven. And so nice to not have to deal with the smell of dead flesh Smiley winking

Forgot to say that your BBQ sounds amazing and that even as a veggie phobic carnivore I would be loving all the food you are providing!

My first impression is it sounds nice, but would be good to have some kind of potato dish, or rice, or something else that's not with a dip. Maybe some veggie pizza slices or something?

I loooooove pate. Some mushroom pate would definitely go down well with me. As you are not having any evening only guests, then adding some rice/potatoes and pate will be plenty.

I think a rice or pasta salad would balance this out nicely and give people plenty of carbs with the bread to fill up on if they're hungry.

Thanks for all the replies, the ideas are great Smiley smile i shall be discussing them wit OH later.

Also thanks for the kind words on the choice of BBQ menu. I was determined to be meat free and wanted something we would both enjoy and hoped that the carnivores would not turn their nose up at! (also wanted to avoid the stereotypical "goat's cheese tart". I was pretty chuffed, as the caterer isn't even a specialist veggie one and most of the others i found were appalling!

I'm reading lots of comments about adding in spoony things like potatoes and rice and I honestly wouldn't... Just add in a vegan non-cheese alternative, some pickles and maybe some olives/antipasti etc.

I think that the dips and cheese and bread and fruit will be amazing and give a lovely relaxed atmosphere rather than that lining up buffet thing where people spoon out onto their plates from each bowl as they go along: you already have that with your BBQ so a change of vibe for the evening will be lovely.

What about wedges, rices, pastas, meat free chili, meat free curry, veggie sausage rolls, veggie spring rolls. I am having quite a few veggie options at our wedding as my daughter and her oh are both veggies.

Someone said Falafels, I think that is good.

Veggie Samosas, spring rolls and onion bhahis are yummy and quite filling, serve with some mango chutney and raita yoghurt dip

I also love Haloumi skewers - appreciate that is still cheese ;-) squeeze over some lemon, serve with salad?

Veggie empanadas (buy in marks n sparks) or cheese pasties/slices?

baked potatoes and baked beans? (ok that needs to be hot)

big pot of veggie chilli? (OK hot too)

cold pasta salad is filling, mix tomato sauce and basil thru it or do a creamy sauce and add peas? little pasta like conchigletti works well for that?

Baba ganoush aubergine dip with pitta bread is filling?

veggie tacos stuffed with salsa and salad and things

spanish omlette made with sliced potatoes and red peppers and corgette?

    more salads like waldorf salad

couscous with roasted veggies through it?

Think Ill just go and make some toast to put me on till brekkie after thinking of all that food!

    xxx
