Advise on the pill to prevent period

drewdrop, 11 October, 2010 at 08:25 Posted on Planning 0 5

Hi

I have been thinking if im due on on the wedding day honeymoon, i would consider taking the pill (norethisterone)

which delays your period.

Has anyone any advice on this?

Also after you have finished it do your periods retuen to normal? or is you regular cycle pushed out? eg do you count 28 days from date of original

period date or the new delayed date?

Thanks

You'll need to have been on the combined pill for a few months before your wedding, not the progesterone-only mini pill. If you take 2 packs in succession you don't have a period until you stop taking them - so effectively you can delay your cycle and avoid probelms for your wedding and honeymoon. Lots of women do this for holidays and special occasions.

I'd check the brand of pill though, I'm not sure the one you mention is suitable for this.

    Hi

I did exactly that. I went to see my doc a week before the Wedding and they gave me a pill (can't remember the name sorry) to stop my period over the wedding and honeymoon. I had enough for 2 weeks and as soon as I sopped taking it my period returned as normal.

I was not on any other pill at the same time.

    Nat

Yup, what Joleenhunter said - microgynon will work if you don't take a break between packs. And its quite safe, and doesn't really cause any major issues next time you are due on...

There are no guarentees with norethisterone. 1 in 10 women will still have breakthrough bleeding and there are quite a lot of other potential side effects. And after you stop taking it. It may take a while for your cycle to get back to normal but everyone is different. And you count your cycle from the first day of the new delayed date.

    HTH!
