Afternoon tea in London - please help!

Marmite, 16 May, 2009 at 21:56 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 4

I have booked the pret a portea at the Berkely hotel (sp) for my friend's birthday the week after next. Now I have read several reviews on trip advisor which really slate it - poor service, stale cakes etc. I so want this London tea to be an excellent experience as well as a memorable present for my friend and so am tempted to cancel and book elsewhere. Thing is, where?! I have been to the Ritz and Claridges (which were both great on Christmas Eve) but I don't really want to spend more than £30/35 per person as I cannot afford more.

Can anyone suggest anywhere that does not have a long booking list and I could book next week for a week later?

Thank you very much in advance for your help. It does not have to be an hotel !

Thanks

Have you tried The Dorchester? We had a wonderful time there for MIL's 60th. I know BIL booked late as he tried to get The Ritz and Claridges first but they were both fully booked.

    I'd suggest the Connaught.

If the Ritz and Claridges are your benchmark, then it won't dissapoint.

We were there a few weeks ago - very attentive service, lovely modern take on sandwiches - eg smoked salmon with wasabi mayo and lovely cakes.

They were more than happy to provide more of anything - and the room/ conservatory it's served in is lovely.

Hope this helps, and have a fab time wherever you decide.

Just one more thing, I don't rate the Berkeley either, i'd say the Connaught is miles better.

    Another vote for the Dorchester.

Took my ex's mother there on her 60th a few years back and the old trout actually smiled and cheered up a bit - so it must have been good if she couldn't find anything to moan at!

Lovely sandwiches tea and cakes! I was stuffed!

I would just go with the one you've booked at The Berkeley - it's a lovely hotel and the theme sounds fab. I've read crap reviews of it as well, but Tripadvisor is full of knobby reviews. Don't panique! x
