Never been so scared, or swam so fast in my life!!

UPDATE .. ignore my last post about it being dead. It's not. It's very much alive. And it looks like this

Any idea what it is Sare? Or any snake experts?

    <sob> in our back garden

And the worst of it was, I was naked!!

Wanted a quick 20 lengths before jumping in the shower .. only to see a snake through the goggles after about 15 or so. Jesus, I'm still shaking, and I've had a shower since!

    Ewwwww

Bloody building work behind us is throwing all the wildlife into our yards.

Yeah, I was nekkid! It was a last minute decision to jump in the pool, and couldn't be arsed getting swim stuff wet, so just went for it. And no, a snake didn't swim out of Lillythepink's avatar! ?

It wasn't in there when I got in, nor was it in the filter as I checked. It must have slithered in while I was swimming, but have no idea how long it was there for as I had my head down going for it - the swimming that was.

I'm still shaking, and heart is still racing.

And I'll probably never get in there again now.

That's got to be, what, 7 or 8 we've had now? It HAS to be the building work scaring them this way

If you don't, you can have mine!

Then again, you've probably got huge spiders?

    ?

Is there anything you can put in the pool to deter them?

Spiders are bad enough for me ?

I haven't seen any snakes, but then where we live is fairly urban (does that make a difference?!). Haven't seen many spiders either. I spotted a huge bee the other day, but that's about it.

You've probably jinxed me now and I'll run into all sorts of insects.

And you can keep your snakes down in Texas, thank you very much ?. Although, obviously not in your pool, so that you can go skinny dipping again in peace!

<shudder> Glad you could swim quickly! Still, rather snakes than spiders any day (totally irrational as snakes are more likely to be dangerous, but somehow less scary)

Holy ***, I'd have to move. It's made me feel funny just reading about it. I think you need a stiff drink.

Well Mr P has just pissed himself laughing, although he was worried at the same time (though didn't sound it!)

And he's made it worse by reiterating that when they put the nature trail in immediately on the other side of our fence, it'll be worse ?

My heart is still thumping! I've left it in there to swim to a certain death in the chemicals. I hate doing that too, but what can I do? Last time we got a snake out and threw it over the fence, everyone said we should have chopped it's head off.

Is there any way you could fence off the pool so the snakes can't get in (assuming that they can't climb fences...!)?

I know you're in a rental, but you might be able to sort something out. Better than avoiding the pool altogether.

What kind of slithery thing was it? I think I would have shat myself if I saw that there and then.....god I'm scared even of grass snakes (although my friend had a python and I wasn't scared of that for some reason but I think that was because I knew it!)

Thats terrifying! Do you know what species it was? Is it still there?

I have a swimming pool inside a cabin and the spiders I find in there are huuugge? and that is bad enough, never mind a snake

Bloody Hell, P, are you ok? I would have crapped myself, to be fair.

You lot are unlucky there, we have never had that problem, although we did spot a little snake in the undergrowth the other day. Hal got the dog in, and went to check it out and its gone, so hoepfully its buggered off elsewhere.
Maybe a stiff drink is in order..

The one in my avatar is the first one we found - which was huge compared to the one I swam with this afternoon, so, as you can see, I was swimming with a tiny snake really ..... but even so!!

It's about a large pencil width and about 2 pencils long. It's currently done a disappearing act as it was in the filter along with leaves and flowers, but when I couldn't get the filter lid back on with a stick (yep, too scared to use my hands!), and it flipped off, the snake was nowhere to be seen!

As for fence CJJ, I asked Mr P the same thing, but he doesn't think anything would work. We could try and put some sort of slime/poison down, but that's me guessing, rather then knowing for real.

I'm *** scared to go in there again. Just as I was gaining confidence after finding the first one, and subsequent grass snakes in there. Arses ?

LOL, I'm fine now, but I nearly did crap myself! I don't quite know how I managed to swim and get out with the hyperventilating that was going on, especially after you and Hal told me last week how to deal with those blighters! And what they can do to us!! Mind you, I think it was a grass snake rather than that cottonmouth, so it was probably more scared of me than me of it. Probably!

My landlady just called about something totally unrelated, so I told her. She nearly crapped herself too! Although they've had a rat, a mouse and a snake in their pool recently (not at the same time!)

She is going to get her husband to get some snake repellent stuff and put it round the fences while we're in the UK next week.

Oh Peaches I would Have been so scared I would have had to move house!

Peaches - Home Depot do some stuff called 'Snake Away' I was having a nose at and a Home Depot guy said it was great stuff really works. I think you put it round the edge of the property. - No idea how it works or anything but might be worth a go.

We have screen enclosure round our pool so we dont get them. Luckily!

Some areas do get more than others and they tend to migrate back to where they were born too (bit like Salmon)

Sare, I remember the last time I posted about finding a snake and you were keen to see the pics. Strange woman that you are lol!

MBK - thanks for the tip re: Home Deeeeepot (I hate that I say it with it's American pronounciation, but saying Depot as we would back home, just doesn't sound right!). Our landlord is going to put some stuff around while we're in the UK next week. We might too, just to make sure.

We can't move house. We're stuck in this one! I'm ok about it now, but I was scared yesterday. My heart was pounding for about 2 hours! It's dead now, and I can't help but feel sad for it. The chemicals in the pool have clearly got to it, poor thing. It's only a small, defenceless snake, about the width of a pencil and about twice as long. A grass snake I think.

We were out with friends for dinner last night and the guy said that if happened to him, he'd move like a shot. I think he was serious!!

I don't know that one, but I'd say Gryfon's suggestion is a good one.

Whatever it is, it's not venomous.
