Alcohol..

WickyWack, 18 March, 2015 at 10:20 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 59

How much is too much?

I am a regular weekend drinker, I normally have between 1-3 bottles of wine from Friday eve - Sunday eve, whereas my H will drink 3-4 pints on a Friday, maybe 1-2 across Sat/Sun.

Talking to my colleagues we are a real mixed bunch from having none at all to having 1 bottle of wine a night, every single day including weekdays (this surprised me a lot!!)

I definitely fall into the "doesn't feel like a relaxed weekend unless there's wine involved" bracket...

Just curious really!

We're not drinkers at all really. If we're out for a meal or have friends over, we have a bottle or two of wine. H will occasionally drink a JD and I'm partial to the odd Irish cream but it's more something we do if we're in the mood than a regular thing.

Maybe it's because we're old and boring though!!

Definitely not old and boring Bekki! Far healthier though, wine is definitely contributing to my persistant fat belly!

I'm not really a drinker - I don't like wine and neither does H, so we very rarely drink at home. When I go out with him when he's DJing I'll sometimes have a cider or two at most, but not every time. I can't actually remember the last time I had a drink - I like a whisky sour or an old fashioned, but I save it for special occasions.

I think if you drink plenty of water/soft drinks/tea etc around the edges then that's OK. I think if you begin to err towards three every weekend being the norm/minimum then that's starting to be a concern. There's a difference between assocaiting wine with a relaxed time to needing a drink and you're nowhere near that. We're all different and it's knowing what's OK and what isn't that matters :/

Me - I love my fizz and G&T and Pimms in the summer and can give them all a serious caning if the opportunity presents, but I don't drink everynight by any means and can go a couple of weeks or more without anything. For me it has to be the right situation and the right drink too. I don't have a drink just because it's friday night so I must for example, and if the bar where we are doesn't have what I like, then I'll have lime and soda instead rather than have something for the sake of it. I'll have a drink any day/night but only if with someone else - never ever on my own.

OH on the other hand - will drink beer, fizz or whisky and would drink beer every night if work permitted - and I didn't scowl at him lol.

During my student years I drank alot, in my mid 20's when my brother passed i drank a lot more. Over the last few years i've definitely cut down. To be honest, i can't drink anywhere near the same amount as before and still function the next day. A bottle of wine and i'd have a crippling headache for 2 days! Whiskey is my drink of choice but maybe 2-3 over an evening as opposed to the 9-10 i would have had back in the day!

It seems the happier I am, the less i drink but H definitely has the 'weekend is not a weekend without a drink' mentality and it's really started to bug me lately. I guess i've changed my mindset towards alcohol since my mum admitted she had a problem. Having two alcoholic parents scares the crap out of me though. I often worry that it's hereditary and that cider and a park bench is my fate!

3 isn't the norm, I'd say 1.5-2 is, though. I defiantly think cutting back would benefit me not only health wise, weight wise, etc but cost wise too!

Maybe 1-2 slimline g&t's would be better!

It really depends, I can go weeks without touching alcohol and then some weeks have a lot. I'm not really fussed about drinking at home it's usually when we go out or occasionally at the weekend, sometimes in the week if I'm in the mood. I'm not really that into wine, I'd rather have a vodka or JD and coke.

Oh is a bit more of a heavy drinker than me and I sometimes worry that he drinks too much but he's on a health kick at the moment so has cut down a lot.

Depends on the weekend really. Maybe 1 bottle of wine over the weekend. Very rarely do I drink in the week unless I am out for tea. I can put loads away on a night out but don't really go out much anymore.

I was talking to our receptionist recently and she drinks every night which I found odd. It gives me a foggy head.

I don;t think you're drinking too much - sorry if that's how it came across - what I was trying to say was if it was that three bottles every weekend was the norm, rather than the average that you have - hope that makes sense. But yes - a couple of slimline G&Ts is lighter on the old calories front and a slightly longer drink too - it's one of the reasons our local indian has one waiting for me when I walk in lol!! It is my drink of choice when I'm trying to be good. A normal measure and slimline is 57 calories - win Smiley smile

I'm not much of a drinker. I'll quite easily go weeks without touching a drop. I only usually drink on nights out now. I used to have a glass of wine with dinner at my parents or the inlaws but since doing SW I don't even do that now. Just nights out for me!

Mr J9 will quite happily drink a bottle of prosecco in an evening though. Usually if there's alcohol at home he'll drink it but if we don't have it he doesn't care.

We're big drinkers - known to a lot of friends as lushes ... if we go out for food, we'll always drink, even if it's lunch or no-one else is drinking (we don't drink to get drunk, we just like a drink or two). We drink a lot if we're home on a Friday or Saturday night and more if we're out.

We've recently, as we're both attempting to increase our health, limited ourselves to one day a week for drinks, which is usually a Saturday - the first Friday actually scared me how lost we were on our Friday night in, we ended up keeping ourselves busy with sorting paperwork and then went to bed at our usual mid-week time because friday night telly isn't funny when sober!!?! That makes me feel horrible.

It's too much if it impacts on work/life. Our friend told us he called out sick last Friday because "one beer led to another" on Thursday night.

For me, I rarely drink - and now even less so after I found out I had some medical problems. I enjoy a glass of red with dinner or a social G&T.

Me and hubby are really not drinkers. so much so we have alcohol go out of date in our house whoops. occasionally we might have a bottle of desperado recently bit that's about it more we've been on several all inclusive holidays and never been drinkers really and I've never seen hubby drunk!

I put it down to having older sisters and seeing them drunk and horrible but I've never wanted to do it.

plus I couldn't justify the cost. how do unemployed people afford to do it?? (know that sounds mean but I have an unemployed by choice sister in law whose always got wine in her hand! )

We never drink in the house(i think we have twice in 6 years) and very rarely drink out and about. If we do drink OH will usually have a pint or two and i'll only have a couple of cocktails.

It would be rare for us to have a completely dry weekend, but normally I'd have no more than 1 bottle of wine across the weekend and OH would have 2/3 beers. We can put quite a bit away on a night out, but those sorts of nights seem to be few and far between nowadays.

I did drink a bit when I was at uni. But as soon as I graduated I started having surgery on my hip, so I was on crutches and taking all kinds of tablets for two years, and couldn't drink at all. My tolerance level fell to zero and never really recovered after that. I just don't like what alcohol does to me - the headaches, nausea, puffy skin, calories and associated junk eating - why would anyone want that, when you can have a nice cup of tea?

I sound really old now. And I am old, but I've felt like that since my mid 20s.

My OH hardly ever drinks, he had a few problems with it before we met and scared himself!
I do tend to drink at the weekends, sometimes its a few bottles of wine with friends and other times its just one glass with Friday dinner. I can't drink if its a school night though ... cannot cope with the fuzzy head Smiley smile
I'm thinking I might try to have a dry April, I know that the wine isn't helping my weight loss Smiley sad

I don't drink very much anymore, lucky if I have a drink once a month. My husband drinks more, he can drink 2 bottles of wine at a weekend. We always have more if we go away in holiday / weekend away / party or barbeque at the house. I think my reasoning for not drinking much is the fact we stay in the countryside and away from our families, if I get a phone call (which I did last year) in an emergency then I can get in my car and go......God how sensible am I getting!!! Smiley smile)))

here I am! I drink an average of 2 bottles of wine per weekend, and will occasionally drink a bottle over the course of 2 or 3 nights in the week. I quite often use wine in cooking, so if it's open, I always have a glass or two... If I'm not drinking wine in the week I often have a small g&t either while cooking or after dinner. My parents ALWAYS have a glass of wine with dinner, and I guess I've picked up that habit of it's not a meal without a wine!

I had my work leaving do last Friday, and mostly stuck to G&T's - started drinking at 4pm and came home at 11:30pm. I think I drank 5 or 6 g&t's and a bottle of beer with dinner. I didn't have a hangover the next day, although I was a bit tired.

I've calmed down a lot in the past 5 years - in my 20s, working in restaurants, I drank a LOT, mostly vodka.... I once got through 3/4 bottle of Grey Goose while working... and during my MA I was getting through a bottle of wine a night. It wasn't good. When I met h2b, we'd often drink 10 pints each on a night out. Ridiculous. h2b has cut back a lot, as he just can't handle hangovers any more, it means a day on the couch and he gets depressed. So he's only drinking about once a month now, and nothing like the amount he used to. When we have a night out now, we drink a much more sensible amount.

Hiyaaa! ? We tend to drink more weekends than not, we usually share a bottle of wine on Friday/Saturday night if we're staying in, or if we go to the pub (our local has 34 different ciders ?) then we'll have maybe 2 or 3 pints each. I don't drink during the week partly because I can't be doing with hangovers at work, and partly in an attempt to be a bit healthier/consume fewer calories. If we go out for dinner I'll have a glass or two of wine if H2B is driving, or we'll share a bottle if we're walking.

On rare occasions we get absolutely hammered - my parents threw a big family bash last year, at which I managed to drink two bottles of prosecco mixed with about two thirds of a bottle of home-made strawberry vodka. The night we got engaged we drank two bottles of fizz and one bottle of red wine, didn't feel too good the next day.

My parents have always drunk at dinner time, including during the week. My mum has a campari and soda before dinner every night, and my dad is a big wine fan and normally gets through a bottle a night (though I think he may be on the verge of having a problem). My dad's side of the family are part Finnish and they can all put it away, I've never seen anyone else drink like they can. What a great thing I have inherited...

I initially read this as you can drink 3 bottles of wine in one sitting! Haha. I was getting worried about you!! My folks can easily drink a couple of bottles each and a few shorts on top if they're having a boozy day, I on the other hand have got so used to being the designated driver (H doesn't drive and I used to live in the arse end of nowhere) that I'm a huge lightweight! If I have a drink at home it will usually just be one! H can drink like a fish though

I don't drink at all, don't like it and it makes me feel awful (not drunk awful just really ill, even after half a glass of wine). Which makes me designated driver forever! H drinks a fair bit, glass of wine or a beer most nights and quite a few if we go out. His friends are all heavy drinkers (bottle a night at least), he can't keep up with them and they just think I am boring lol.

I definitely qualify as a hitched wino / lush.

I've spent the day in bed nursing a hangover from yesterdays paddys day celebrations.

OH and I drink wine most nights although I've cut down as I still need to lose weight.

At the weekend we usually get through one or two bottles of wine each night if we stay in, If we go out OH will usually have a couple of beers before joining me on the wine.

I only get hangovers if I drink excessively - like yesterday.

No winos here! Husband will have 2-3 pints a week or maybe a G&T if he goes out with work people or we go out with friends.

I don't really drink as I don't like the taste of alcohol. Maybe a couple of times a year I will have a few cocktails or vodka lemon & lime.

If we go out for dinner we have lemonade or fizzy water! It is a bone of contention as I don't like wine and husband won't order it on his own.

Very rarely drink at home, unless we've got family round for dinner or something. H might have a whisky once a week, and we have a fabulous collection of spirits, but I rarely touch it. I work so many weekends that they're not really that special to me!

I will drink at a party or if we're out at a pub but my tolerance is pretty low now (much lower than uni days!) and hangovers seem to get worse as I get older, so I don't enjoy being really drunk.
