Alcohol problem question?

Buttons, 12 May, 2009 at 20:41 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 5

I'm beginning to wonder if my mum has an alcohol problem.

She seems to have a few drinks every day, well at least 5 out of 7 days. She doesn't sleep very well and I wonder if the drinking is being used to help her with sleep? I have jokingly mentioned it to my dad, but he doesn't really say anything. If she has a drink at the weekends; she will start around 4pm if not a little earlier, especially if the weather is nice. Maybe I see it as a problem because H and I don't really drink. In fact I couldn't tell you when I last had a proper drink, even before we were TTC.

How often do people drink? Is a few shandys (I should point out she drinks lemonade and lager - 2 cans; maybe 3) in the evening excessive? I think her and my dad could easily get through a pack of lager a week.

It doesn't seem remotely excessive to me. Most people i know have a glass or two of wine a night, A couple of shandies a night is nothing.

I don't drink and that doesn't seem a lot to me. My understanding of an alcoholic is someone who needs a drink as soon as they wake up, so if she's waiting until late afternoon to start and some days not drinking at all, she's not addicted.

Blimey you should come to my house then. One or two (sometimes 3) large brandy and cokes a night is the norm a bottle of wine to my self on a weekend night. Probably nearly a bottle of wine once a week on a work lunch and I won't get started on a night out. It sounds perfectly normal to me.

Not wanting to down play what you are saying because only you can judge if it is out of the ordinary for your mum.

Well the weekly recommended maximum units of alcohol for females is 14 per week.

If your Mum's drinking the equivalent of say 2 x568ml cans of Stella, 5 nights of the week, that would equate to 26 units per week as each can contains 2.6 units. So even 1 can 5 nights of the week is 13 units.

I think you could be right to be concerned about her especially as it's affecting her sleeping. Some people rely on alcohol to relax but it can easily have the opposite effect. Binge drinking is even worse than regular light drinking and equates to 5 units in 1 day.

    Thanks for all the replies.

I think my concern is that it seems whenever I speak to her on the phone in the evenings I can tell by her speech she has had a couple of drinks. She does know her limit and when her and my dad go on a night out with my uncles/aunts etc she knows when to stop. I think I'm just worrying about nothing. Mainly as she used to work nights and has only recently become day shift.

I do worry she is using alcohol to help her sleep and I will try and speak to her about it.
