Aldi - What to buy and what not to buy?

Ann-Louise, 15 July, 2008 at 08:56 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 13

I'm going to pop to our local Aldi today as i've been hearing good things about them. Is there anything i should be trying or definitely avoiding?

I *think* there's a thread about Aldi/Lidl products, good and bad buys on moneysavingexpert if you do a search. There was also a thread similar to this on Hitched a week or so ago. Again, might be worth doing a search.

I need to visit these places myself, I was really shocked at some of the prices in Tesco last night, I think we'll be becoming vegetarians in the very near future lol!

    I always buy
    Spaghetti and Rice
    Tinned Toms
Their 100% frozen Burgers are 99p for 4 atm and they are really nice
Cheeses inc The brie with Green peppercorns round and Chilli!
Bishops Land Cheddar is great too
We tried their 'cheese curls' yesterday and they are IMO nicer than Quavers
    Lots of nice biscuits

People on here rave about the antipasti in jars - I love their Pesto too

They do some interesting Deli meats and European food inc German Frikadellan which I love.

NB the Chicken isn't happy we did have it once and it actually wasnt bad though.

The face cream I like too - Tampons are also spectacular value!

On the (rare) occasions I go to Aldi I've bought:

    • Parmesan
    • Antipasti in jars (the roast peppers are yummy)
    • Ciabatta (pre-baked)
    • Cheeses (brie with green peppercorns was fab from memory)
    • Night cream (as seen on How to look good naked)

I like their day cream and night cream- its £1.89 and its fab, it smells lovley and isn't greasey and sinks in really quickly.

Tbh, I prefer Lidl as where we live Aldi is more expensive.

they whizz it through really quickly...its a cost cutting thing so they have less staff=saving money

its not problem if you're only buying a few things but if you have a trolley load you need to put it back in the trolley and pack it at the shelves beyond the till, or just put boxes/trolley bags in the trolley and chuck the stuff in. so when you unpack, put the heavy stuff on the belt first

i recommed the anti pasti jars, the washing machine liquid, the baron wine, the handwash (on offer for 55p at the moment), the titan (mars) and racer (snickers) mars, the deli meat and cheese, the part baked ciabatta, the mini 'magnums', the pain au chocolat...loads really ?

I like their 'salt your own crisps', actually think they taste better than Smiths. Although MrB has complained that he has been ripped off twice as his little blue bag of salt was missing. ?

Last week we also tried their own brand shreddies and they were just as good.

They are good for cream crackers, cookies, nice cheeses, cheap ice cream dessert type things, BeLight yoghurts. Oh and I also get their rip off version of Red Bull which is half the price.

    In Lidl I recommend:

Cloudy lemonade, Lasagne from the chiller cabinet, tinned tomatoes, strawberries/rasberries/other in season fresh fruit, tinned rice pudding, tinned custard, cherry bakewells, hand cream, baby wipes (cien sensitive - as good, if not better, than pampers sensitive), handwash & shower gel, biscuits, cured meats, beef topside (in chiller, great for sarnies), coleslaw with cheese, mini melton mowbray pies, free range eggs, brie, their ready meal currys from the chiller are very good, crayfish tails in the chiller (yummy in sarnies/wraps), tortillas, pesto, their baked beans aren't too bad.

I have not tried their meat or chicken and have started going to Lidl first to get as much as I can, and then Sainsburys for the rest.

    Has anyone tried Lidl nappies?
