Alteration costs

belindacoles, 15 December, 2010 at 11:48 Posted on Planning 0 20

Hi ladies,

Just wondering on an average what people have paid for alterations to bridesmaids dresses.

Have been quoted by my bridal shop and am a bit shocked at the cost....

Thanks Smiley smile

Howe much have u been quoted and how much needs doing?

Ive been quote between 130-150 for taking the dress in 3 sizes, taking it up a few inches and adding in some bling bling...its a reasonable cost aswell!

Yeah I did get my dress from Bride to Be.

I have been quoted around £150 for my dress, which Im fine with.

But for bridesmaids I have been quoted a £10 consultation fee and then £30 an hour - so appx £70 per bridesmaid, which I think is a bit steep... they need the length doing and nipping in tighter at the bust.

Woah!! I didn't realise some places charged so much. I've just had mine altered and it came to £70 for my dress and 2 bridesmaids. See if you can go to an independant seamstress. The one I used was the recommended one for the shop but didn't work for the shop or anything.

Cool thanks I might try that. Im a bit annoyed as when I ordered they just said "its around £30 per hour"... didnt specify that there was a consultation fee, nor that it would take multiple hours.

I think people just always try and cash in on weddings. If you asked for just an average dress to be altered it wouldn't cost that much, even if it had all the detail that a wedding dress had on. I'm sure there's no reason why the dress shop shouldn't let you take your dress to another seamstress.

If you want I can give you the details of my seamstress? I havent contacted her yet as I dont need mine altering just yet so I dont know how reasonable she is. But might be worth a try to compare prices? She doesnt work directly for my bridal shop but was recommended by them. She's not too far from Crowthorne if thats any good to you?

Yes please hun if you dont mind. Im not keen to take my wedding dress elsewhere due to responsibility/insurance issues etc - but def need to find a cheaper option for the 4 bridesmaids dresses.

Seeing as you got your dress from Bride to Be, are you anywhere near Tadley? I can thoroughly recommend the lady who altered my wedding dress for a mere £60. She's a trained tailor and her alterations were perfect. She took up the length, sewed in some booby bits, put a loop on the train and sewed a secret message into the seam of my underskirt. So cheap for such excellent work! Let me know if you want her details. We got our bm dresses from B2B and I think were charged £100.

Im based in Yateley, so think Tadley may be a little bit too far out for me - not entirely sure where it is?

It's between Reading and Basingstoke, but nearer Basingstoke and I'm sure is closer to your than Reading. If you're interested and just wanted to find out a little bit more about costs etc, her name is Jackie and her number is ****. I can't recommend her highly enough. Two days before the wedding one of my corset loops broke and she mended free of charge and checked all the others were strong enough to hold too.

I had 'J & H 16.10.10' sewn into my underskirt in blue as my 'something blue'. My OH loved it! I'm really miffed that I forgot to tell the tog though as I don't have any photos of it. I liked that only OH and I knew about it!

The bridal shop that I have ordered my dress from insist on using their seamstress but they only charge £15 an hour. The only problem is they can't give me an indication of how many hours it is gonna take. They have told me that it will definately need at least the length doing and with the style of my dress I am expecting that to ake at least 4-5 hours....
