Alterations

techbride, 20 September, 2012 at 14:38 Posted on Planning 0 10

Hi all- I'm thinking of visiting a couple of wedding sales in coming weeks and was just wondering how they worked? I'm quite tall so don't think I'd need any length taking up if I found a dress in my size, but do they do the alterations for you if it does need adjusting a bit, or do you have to source your own seamstress? I don't think I know anybody who could fit a wedding dress, I don't even know anyone who can hem a pair of jeans! Anyone found their dress off the peg? What's the process?

    Hi there

Not sure I know what you mean by a wedding sale - in a bridal shop? or at a wedding fair? I bought an ex-sample from a charity shop, so that's a bit different, but I think if you buy an ex-sample from a wedding shop, you would need to pay for your own alterations, just as you would if you bought a new one and had it made for you... which always seems a bit of a swizz to me, but that's a different discussion!

I would have thought the wedding shop would be able to recommend someone. If you tell us where you are based, someone here might be able to suggest a seamstress in your area?

I had mine taken up - I'm 5'8" but wearing flat shoes, and I needed about 3" taken off the length. I also had the bodice taken in, a button loop added for a bustle, bra straps added inside, and some loose threads etc tidying up... total cost £190 - virtually doubling what I paid for the dress! I know others on here have paid more like £100 though so you might well get it cheaper than I did. It's a very detailed process though, as the material may have lots of layers, intricate detailing etc...

I went to 'the wedding sale' i'm not sure if that is one of the ones on your list? And they did an alterations package for £190 which I thought was okay as I had got my dress so much cheaper than I budgeted for anyway! ? xx

Jeeez you would've thought if you spent five hundred quid or so with them on a dress, the least they could do would be to make it fit! Meh never mind hopefully the saving I'll make if I find a sale dress will help pay for any necessary alterations. I'm from Peterborough and have found a sale coming up in a couple of weeks, but not sure where the location is yet?! Apparently I'm going to recieve a ticket or something by email confirming the details. Might have a mooch around the charity shops on Saturday, see if there's anything of interest, a bargain would certainly help the wedding budget, which needs all the help it can get at the minute!

Yeah I don't think it's too bad an asking price considering some bridal shops I saw were asking for over £250 just for alterations! Shocking!

Oh right okay, I'll try and be prompt at least! OO which bridal shop is that? Is it in Peterborough?! I've had a look on Preloved because I use it for buying other stuff (and selling), but I'm a bit concerned about sizing, because different bridal designers seem to measure up differently. my thinking was at least in the shop I can try it on and prance around for a bit to check it fits, if I use preloved the seller a) may not let me try before I buy b) might rush or pressure me into making a decision if I turn up to have a look at a dress

This is the one I've got an e ticket for MaddyMay, what was it like? Where is it held? What kind of price range were the dresses?

It is quite cheecky I think that most places charge on top for alterations, because they all set their own prices for the gowns as it is so could factor in the alterations. I've found the same dress in several different places and several different prices - the dress I have my heart set on is nearly £900 (and the main reason I haven't ordered it already is because I am really battling with myself about spending that on a dress!) but alterations would be another £100. Crazy!
