Altering a dress

TheMrsMeFo, 27 August, 2013 at 13:22 Posted on Planning 0 15

I am in love with 3 wedding dresses, and I know that one of them is the one for me, all 3 gave me the cheesy smiles, excited, happy, princess feeling, one made me cry, one made my mum and a BM cry.

I am going back to try all 3 dresses on in the same day in a few days, however as I'm sure you all know - since Saturday, I have done nothing BUT think of these three dresses. 2 of them are very similar - lace, sparkly, fitted, high necks and backs. 1 is strapless, sparkly, big silk princess skirt (this is the style I was so sure I didn't want).

My thoughts have been - can it really be 'the one' if you would change anything about the dress? The one that is strapless and big skirt, I would be wanting to add sleeves, however I think it would look silly as the bustier part of the dress is sooo sparkly. I don't just want to add straps as I feel like I look massive and broad in a strapless dress. This makes me think although I ADORE the dress, its not the one. Noone cried, I just had a big cheshire grin on my face!

One of the dresses that are similar to each other, I would add a belt to, not such a dramatic change but still a change, it made me cry. The other dress - I wouldn't change a thing and it was also my dream dress when browsing online and seeing it in the shop window. It also is the one that made my mum and a BM cry.

I know everyone goes on about knowing 'the one' when you try a dress on, but I am not fully convinced that exists, or maybe I just won't get that feeling with just one dress.

I have also thought about going to a designer to see if they can design a dress that incorporates the big princess style skirt of the dress I love and the top of one of the other dresses, however when I think of how it would look - dogs dinner comes to mind and I just cant see it working!

Anyways the reason for this post (sorry for it turning into a long one) is to ask this simple question - if you want to alter a dress in a big way, does this really mean its not the one and is the dress you woudn't change a thing on the one?

Can you flash the princessy one and one of the others, to see what a combination dress might look like?

I personally wouldn't have changed a single thing about my dress.

See I think if you don't want to change anything about it, then it means its perfect, so must be 'the one'!! Sorry if the pics are huge...!!!

I would want this skirt. with one of the below top halves.

I also think, that the 2 lace dresses, I could have altered after the wedding so they are a shorter style so I could wear again. As I really don't think I'd want to sell my dress afterwards.

Could you wear one of those bolero things (I'm so up on all the lingo... NOT!) on top of the first dress? I love the bottom two, much like the one I've fallen in love with but now can't have because they are too expensive!

The bolero being on of those that does up at the back if you see what I mean?

Ah, good thinking Bobbin! I would have it on the whole day I think, I just feel that my boobs are too big to be in a strapless dress so would like some coverage. Bolero could be the answer! The strapless dress is the most expensive out of all 3, by nearly £500! So part of me does wonder if I should be adding / altering it as that will cost more. x

I would go a few times, on different days and try them all on again. I fell in love with 2 dresses when I first went, but I am not a girlie girl, I am very much jeans tshirt and trainers so seeing myself in a beautiful dress was overwhelming and I think I confused that feeling with 'the one' feeling.

I think if you choose a bolero, it will need to be different to the lace/tulle jobs that prevail. Something blocked white and ruffled, that at least balances the skirt:

I think you are on to something there FTLOMB! I do think that deep down I feel it's the type of dress I should have just because its the dress most brides wear.

Hiya, no the top one is a Martina Liana dress. It is the Cassidy that has been my dream dress since I started looking and made my mum and a BM cry. It is the one dress I wouldn't change a thing, so to me that means its perfect. We may end up being dress twins!!! X

Yeah the high necks and backs really suit me so I definitely want that. Might see if they have that with a princess style skirt and see how I feel. X

All 3 are gorgeous dresses! I'm of the same mind as others have said, if there's things you would change, it's not THE dress...

Having said that though, I'm completely in love with 2 dresses of different styles and am now trying to find a dress that incorporates what I love most about each dress. The lovely lady in the dress shop found one for me but its waaaay over budget!!

My hunt for the perfect dress continues...
Good luck deciding, I'm sure whichever you go for, you will look stunning!!

I think that if you want to change elements of your dress, then it isn't the one for you. Sorry to be so blunt but there are thousands of different dresses out there and if your ticker is correct, then you have over a year and a half to find the perfect one. When I tried mine on I just 'knew' and I didn't want to try any others on as I knew that I had found it.

Before you make any decisions, I think that you should continue to look around and try on as many dresses as you can!
