Alternative to fresh flowers

Purplemunchkin, 22 August, 2013 at 21:10 Posted on Planning 0 13

Hi there

I'm a second time around newbie after a bit of inspiration from you lovely Hitchers.

We're having a very small (our parents and children only) mid-week ceremony, with a big party the following Saturday and I want to be able to wear the same outfit and acessories on both days.

I really liked the idea of a button theme for the wedding, so a button bouquet, etc would have been perfect; H2B hates the idea. He also hates bouquets made of brooches, feathers or paper flowers.

We don't have a big budget and I think decent silk flowers would be too expensive, especially if you include button holes and bridesmaids. Buttons would have been relatively inexpensive.

So I'm feeling a bit stuck as it seems that anything I think of is disliked, although you note he is not offering any alternatives... Can anyone offer any ideas?

Thanks

I'm hoping to make my bouquet from felt, paper and wool using this for inspiration...

I've started making my flowers/pom poms and so far so good, so am hoping it will turn out looking decent ;-)

I've already made my buttonholes with felt flowers...

Would felt flowers appeal to you?

Silk flowers can be very reasonable and look very good - you'd be surprised!

Also, I've recently bought some foam rose bouquets from ebay and I was pretty impressed with their quality. Might be worth looking at that too?

I would also say that silk flowers and real flowers can be as expensive or inexpensive as you like. However your H2B sounds like a traditionalist so why not have fresh flowers?

My friend is having wooden ones, if you google "wooden wedding bouquets" you will see them. They are quite fine wood, a little like thick pencil shavings - they look fab

I'm getting married abroad and the prices the hotel were offereing for a bridal bouquet were starting at $195 !!!! so I bought my own online from Sue's flowers of York. It has cost £27.99 and is made of foam and pearls. I only ordered it yesterday so not sure of the quality yet but for that price if I don't like it I can always look again.

Personally I think go with what you want and H2B will probably not even notice.

I'm making my own button bouquet my oh wasn't 100% but likes it now it is done! We are having silk flowers there is a stall on our local market that does some brilliant ones, we need 22 including some corsages and it will cost us around £120 i think! I have seen some book page bouquets or knitted ones though.

I'm making an origami flower bouquet at the moment, haven't assembled it fully yet but here's a flash of what I did this evening to give you an idea.

I have no idea why it's upside down...

I have been to a few weddings where the bride has had a simple and elegant bouquet of fresh 'baby's breath' - a simple, small white, elegant flower and not expensive. Seems to be very popular at the moment.
We use silk flowers quite a lot and the quality available now is incredible - the trick is to know where to source them. Poundland is defo one to avoid! Ha ha!

    Thanks everyone.

I love all the crafty things you've done and wanted to do something similar but H2B doesn't like anything I show him pictures of.

He says he's not set on proper flowers, but obviously he is. As real flowers aren't an option due to the gap of several days between the wedding and the reception, I think it may have to be silk ones. I've looked at foam ones, but they seem to just be roses...
