Am I being realistic?

MrsB2B2011, 3 December, 2010 at 20:12 Posted on Planning 0 17

Hi everyone,

This is my first post and I'm just hoping to get some advice from you all. I got engaged 3 weeks ago and we haven't done anything yet apart from discuss guestlist and budget and google some venues. We really want to get married on 8th Oct next year. We're going to view a few venues on 19th & 20th Dec but apart from these days we won't be able to do much else until the new year.

I just want to know if I'm being realistic thinking I can get everything organised in just over 9 months?

Thanks!

You'll be fine. Just be sure to get your venues sorted first as places book up so quickly ?

    Hi,

Hello welcome, and congratulations to you both.

Sounds like you have had a very good start already, and yes you are being realistic.

9 months is plenty of time to organise a wedding, I organised my clients wedding in 12 weeks from start to finish, and they lived in Hong Kong.

Where are you thinking about getting married?

    The immediate needs are:

    1) Find a licensed venue (or church) for your ceremony.

    2) Find a reception venue (if it's a licensed venue you can have the reception in the same place).

For both of the above, check that their maximum and minimum capacities are within the boundaries of what you expect your guest list to be - and beware that some venues have different numbers for the wedding breakfast (afternoon meal) and evening reception.

    3) Check if you need a registrar (all licensed venues, and some churches do) and if so, book them - if you do and one is not available on the date and time you choose then you cannot be married.

    4) Start dress shopping - unless you are lucky to get an 'off the peg' you may find a 6 month delivery time or more for 'the' dress. Similarly for bridesmaids dresses

    5) Choose your photographer - they book up way in advance too.

"The Book" says your invites don't need to go out till 3 months beforehand but I personally think this is silly - I'd get them out as soon as you have a date and venue set in all honesty so people can return them.

Then the 'less important details' like flowers, table decorations, table plans, hymns (if in a church), menu options etc will fall into place once you have your budget set.

Hiya! Yes I think that's enough time. We got engaged at the end of September, and have got all the big things organised already! Also if you get your date of 8th Oct, we'll be date twins!

9 months is plenty. At least being 'off season' you stand a decent chance of finding good suppliers who are available.

Let us know were you are and what you're after and I'm sure some HIBs and local brides will be able to help.

Thank you all so much for your reassuring replies! We're in London but hoping to marry in Warwickshire where H2B is from. WeKve got 5 potential venues to view before Christmas and I've just booked an appointmernt to look for a dress on 22nd Jan. Am starting to feel better for doing that at least. I think once we've got the venue sorted I'll feel like it's real! How exciting to have a date twin...hope I get Oct 8th!

I planned booked & married all within 12 weeks! It is possible as long as you are not too stuck on one particular venue. Flexibility is key when you are looking.

You'll be fine! We are having a 2-year engagement but to be honest, apart from booking the venue and photographer, we didn't really do any planning until a couple of months ago. Hope your venue viewings go well.

ooh, which venues in Warwickshire are you looking at?

9 months is more than enough time do not worry! Once you have your venue sorted, that's the main thing then everything else is planned from there

Totally realistic - we got married in April but did nothing until late Oct 09 - so 6 months! That said if you want a specific venue that is popular you might find it booked out already.

I could have easily organised ours within 9 months. I think you just need to be more open with the suppliers you want to have as the bigger local ones to you may well have bookings for 2 years in advance.

You'll be fine, go for it. x

My H2B and i originally decided in September of this year to get married in May 2011, that gave us 9 months (including sept). I found out i'm pregnant the other week and as a result we've brought the wedding forward to February 19th..... it's very do-able and highly realistic.

Our entire wedding (including the wedding rings which are costing us £452!) comes in at not even £1300. - my jaw nearly hit the floor at the cost of the rings i have to say, but we've compromised so much elsewhere i thought why not.

I've kept the costs down by:

Register office ceremony (actually done at the town hall for £150) + the giving notice fees etc.

My dress is actually a bridesmaids dress in black (i don't do the big white dress thing)

I made the invites, guest book and wedding album

my friend is doing the photography for £30!

we've asked our neighbour, the park keeper to use his car (we'll pay him of course) - and he said yes.

i'm not having bridesmaids, just my best friend as my witness.

and the wedding cakes i'm getting from M&S and decorating myself.

flowers are silk from ebay, custom made for £75

There are loads of ways to keep the costs down, and you'll deffo be able to do it in 9 months.

p.s everyone on here is really helpful and theres some great inspiration on here too xx

Ooh congratulations on your pregnancy miss.understood! We are going to look at Nailcote, Walton Hall, Brandon Hall, Warwick House and one other that H2B has found and wants to see as it's near where his grandparents are buried but I can't remember the name. Everywhere seems to get 4 or 5 stars on the Hitched reviews so until we've seen them in real life I don't know which I will like best! We can be flexible on date and to be honest I just want everyone to have a good time wherever we get married! x

Brandon Hall is just up the road from where I grew up - lovely place and great for weddings!

Nailcote and Walton Hall are stunning venues, although never been to a wedding there so can't comment more.

Good luck having a look around and hope you find one you love.
