AM I BEING SCAMMED?!

tiabethan, 10 November, 2013 at 20:21 Posted on Planning 0 10

Hi, does anyone know when fees are normally paid to to freelance hair/make-up artists? I'm getting married 28th Dec and I've already paid a hefty deposit plus money for my trial (£360) and now I'm being asked to pay the remaining amount 7 weeks in advance? I've not had any invoice, receipt for what I've already paid etc. If this is quite normal thats fine but I'm concerned that there is nothing stopping her from just not showing up.....what do you think?

Mmmm that is quite a deposit you have paid so far...... I would ask them for a receipt and also comlete breakdown invoice bfore handing over any more money... if they are insisting payment pay by credit card if you can so you are covered.., express your concerns and see if they would accept half now and balance on the day... good luck

I don't think you are being scammed (yet!) but before you hand over anymore money you MUST insist on a receipt and breakdown of the services that are to be provided. By not having these things you are essentially allowing her to walk away! I have booked and paid deposits for both hair lady and MUA and for both they acknowledged payment and emailed/posted a receipt and invoice, detailing the service to be provided and outstanding balance.

I'm surprised they haven't sent you anything similar - if anything to cover themselves, as you (not saying you would do this) could claim they had said they would do x, y, z and it's your word against theirs. I wouldn't be handing anymore money over until the deposit has been acknowledged and a detailed invoice (and outstanding balance) sent to you.

I don't know, try and get everything in writing, even though you've paid a fair chunk of it. Could just play it that you're a bit scatter brained at a minute and want to make sure youve got everything clear. If you haven't got anything in writing there shouldn't be a request for the balance being paid that far in advance. It's a tough one, sorry it's not much help. Hope you get it sorted.

Get a receipt and a written agreement setting out terms including payment terms and cancellation clause

Some services take payment up to two months in advance. Hair and makeup often on the day. I wouldn't of said those payment terms were unusual.

Not having an invoice detailing amounts is though. The cost must of been disclosed at the point of the original booking?

I paid my deposit for make up artist a week ago and still waiting for my receipt although my deposit was only 40 as i have only booked make up for me and two bridesmaids. Hopefully she sends it soon apparently had a berevmemnt.

Id call the person and ask for a receipt as you need it for insurance purposes.

Thank you all for your replies, it is all common sense stuff. I have asked for receipts in the past but she has never got round to it. I will definitely ask for receipts and a written agreement before handing over any further money. I do think it will be okay but I just want to protect myself. I will keep you updated with what happens - thank you all for taking the time to respond, most appreciated.

Hi I have paid £100 deposit with www.veilofyork.co.uk for both hair and makeup, which secures my date and comes off my total, it seems a extremely expensive deposit you have paid?

Just call them and explain you've checked your wedding insurance paperwork and have discovered you must have an invoice from each supplier. Ask them to send over the invoice and a receipt for the initial payment. Don't pay anything else until you have an invoice.
