Am I being unrealistic? Catering query

Beckcible, 23 November, 2015 at 16:35 Posted on Planning 0 14

Hi all

We are really trying to keep costs down with our wedding (budget is around £6000 including the honeymoon!) however, we did imagine we would have to fork out a lot on catering.

In our naive little minds, we thought £1000 was a lot. Mwhahaha! How wrong could we be!

Anyway, we are having an informal wedding breakfast buffet at our reception venue, after our ceremony at the registry office. We were then planning on having drinks and speeches and that kind of thing until the reception, when we were planning on having a BBQ for the reception attendees.

I got my catering quotes back today and although the buffet price was what I expected. The BBQ was £12.50 per head @ 1 burger each. For 120 people that would be £1500....for a BBQ. Also, I haven't mentioned that the food is all provided for by the reception venue.

Needless to say, on our budget we can't spend that and we are now looking at other options/caterers that could do the BBQ cheaper, but really I was just curious to know what you think. Am I being naive or is 12.50 for a burger pretty expensive!!

Am I being daft thinking that's ridiculous. 12.50 a head for a BBQ I wouldn't really mind but would expect a lot more than a burger per person. Surely that comes with other food and lots of sides out etc? Either way hope you can find someone cheaper and thank god I'm eloping!

What about a hog roast to compare.

We are paying £16 per head in the evening for ours but we are getting Burgers, Sausages, Veggie Kebabs, rolls/baps, salads, coleslaw etc which didnt seem too bad to me.

I would go back and ask them to justify the amount as i think they might be trying to pull a fast one.

We're having burgers and brats in the evening and we're being charged around £8 per head. The guy we're using is incredible and they're not your average burger (Nacho Libre one has nachos, chorizo, jalapeño jelly and homemade cheese!).

Venues do tend to charge a premium unfortunately, which is why we've chosen a DIY reception in a village hall. Don't get me wrong, the catering is still extortionate BUT it's from a supplier we have experience with and love plus food is top of the list for us (especially after the amount of dieting we're doing!)

I'm feeling hungry just talking about this ?

I can't comment on the 1 burger at £12.50 issue but I have to say that budgeting less than £10 a head for food seems unrealistic.

Thank you peeps! In the short time that I have posted this message it seems that we might have already found a BBQ caterer that does a BBQ with all the trimmings for £6.95 per head. On top of the buffet/drink that would just over £10 per person. We will probably under order a bit, but I've seen how food often doesn't get eaten/wasted at weddings/birthdays. When there's a will there's a way Smiley winking Fingers crossed we can keep this up without a hitch Smiley smile

It depends on what you're providing. My evening food is coming in at under £10 per head (although the day time food will be more like £35).

If you're having a casual evening reception then I don't think it's unrealistic at all. People have to work to a budget they can afford and it wasn't so long ago that a wedding reception consisted of a buffet catered by family in the village hall or a few drinks down at the pub.

I for one had no experience of catering for a wedding or any event of this scale until I became engaged, in that sense we are all naïve to some extent and it's unfair to say that especially if you can't offer anything constructive.

That sounds pretty good actually. It's mad when you think of it as a burger but your paying for waiting staff etc, I would check your quote includes plates etc or that you get use of venue cutlery etc as ours is £11pp for bbq buffet but not including plates or cutlery. With those it's an extra 200 or so to cover for staff to clear away

not at all - our will be under that for the evening, we are budgeting £15pp for the breakfasts starter and main (£8pp for children) and £7pp for the evening and found several outside caterers that can supply within this price plus the venues we have viewed can aswell (we also considered the option of afternoon tea at some of the venues instead which comes in roughly the same price's)

but then we are also not looking at 'wedding' venues with set 'packages' as the are extortionatly priced - some flyers I collected stated mimimum of £75pp for the breakfast alone with a minimum of 50 people, thats £3750 on food before anything else which is more than half our budget ? plus ive never been a castle of stately home type person anyway... id feel a bit silly pretending to be a princess when im common as muck in real life ?

So glad that you found another company, because £12.50 for 1 burger did seem quite dear. So yay Smiley smile

Depends on the burger. One can get a McDonalds burger for about £1 or a GBK burger for £7. I would (and have) paid £12.50 for a good burger. I really, really love burgers.

I've just looked at our info as we are doing a Hog roast on the evening but I know there was a BBQ option...

Ours is £7.50 per guest which is a bit more reasonable. I think it'll always be overpriced though - they have to account for other overheads unfortunately Smiley sad

Ours is provided by the venue also.

We're having a hog roast for 120 people with roast potatoes, 3 salad options and a veggie option. We're paying £1250 for 120 people so just over £10 per head. I wouldn't be happy if it was just for the pork bun!
