Am I crazy to pay things early?!

Follies123, 20 August, 2013 at 15:53 Posted on Planning 0 14

My OH and I have been saving for a while and were lucky enough to have received some money from my parents so I currently have quite a bit of savings. I feel like I want to get things paid and out of the way and completed ticked off and sorted. Has anybody else done this? Or is it best to just pay when requested to do so?

Thanks in advance ? xx

Honestly its up to you, but I didn't pay for anything until the few weeks before. I don't know if you have wedding insurance, but if you don't, what would you do if a company goes bust and you lose all your money, rather than just your deposit. Also, for me, my plans changed over the year and a half I was planning, and therefore so did the cost of some of the things I had booked and gotten quotes for.

Depending how far off your wedding is I would hang off paying for people until payment is due on the basis that if in the unlikely event that any of your suppliers fold between now and the wedding you don't want them to do so with your full payment.

I honestly wouldn't pay more than you need to upfront. You need to protect your money as best as possible against suppliers going bust etc.

Yes, insurance should pay out but not always quickly and it's better you have the money than have to claim it back.

We're the same. I like getting things paid for and knowing it's all taken care of. I hate feeling that I "owe" anyone money, especially when I just have it sitting there, ready to pay, but it isn't due. We're paying off the venues in full around Christmas time as the thought of having that money just sitting there is beginning to get on my nerves ?

We are being sensible about it though and making sure any payments are made on credit cards (and immediately paid off) for a bit of extra protection.

Agree with everyone about protecting your money against loss. But also, why not have the money sitting in savings account earning interest for you for as long as possible?

This exactly how I feel. I suppose I think if its paid off I don't have to think about it again and can concentrate on other bits.

We do have insurance and the sensible part of me does think best not in case anything goes bust. Think I'll just leave it, most things have to be paid end of November so don't have too long to wait and stare at the dosh sat there!

    Thanks for your replies xxx

I agree with other people who have posted, we are only paying for what our suppliers ask for NOW and will pay the rest when it is due. It is a horrible feeling owing money to people but it offers you better protection.

    Exactly this.

Just keep a note of who you've booked, deposit paid and when final payment is due. This is what I've done and I've put it all in my diary so I don't miss payments (although I'm sure the companies will prompt me for payment!).

As others have said only pay when required to safeguard your money. Also pay where possible on credit card and pay off in full to give you added protection.

You could put it in an account that you cant touch without giving 30days notice - that way you have the money but not able to spend it straight away if your anything like me for new clothes!!

    Hello,

Have you got wedding insurance? If so read the small print as the insurance I took out only covered paying back monies due at the time. Basically had we paid loads upfront before the payment due date then irrispective of what we had paid the company would only have paid back what was due at the time.

Personally I would put the money to one side and pay when due incase (heaven forbid) anything happened and they couldnt make it and you had to fight to get all thats due back to you.

hope this helps a little x

Some suppliers want deposit paid months and even years before the big day venues are a big one there. Paying would depend on how far away your wedding is.

Thanks for your all advice. I am just going to hold off, wedding in just over 5 months so I suppose its not too long until I will be dishing it out and no doubt then wish I still had it all starting at me!

    Thanks again xx

I asked this and got the same responses as you :-)

I held off and I'm glad I did.

I wish I'd put the money in a savings account or used a cashback credit card to pay stuff with etc.

My advice would be to spend some time working out how you can be money savvy with your wedding - its a lot of money going from your pot to someone elses!
