Am I eligible for dole?

Tommo, 5 April, 2008 at 18:57 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 10

Hi,

Does anyone know about job seekers allowance/dole? I was self employed and had to give up work in January to care for my special needs son. We're doing various courses and spending time with him, but financially I need to find a job for 10-15 hours a week. I'm actively searching but the hours need to fit around my son's childcare.

Whilst I'm 'unemployed' would I be eligible for any dole? My husband works FT but we're really struggling financially as he supports two other children and an ex wife too.

I've written to the tax credits people to say I'm no longer self employed, but they've not said that we're eligible for anything yet.

Not sure how to find out?

You have to be available for at least 16 hours per week on jobseekers, but if yor son has special needs and gets dla middle or high rate care you may be able to claim carers allowance.

I think some of it depends on your contributions over the past 3 years - class 2 NI isn't enough i don't think.

    Hi St Knickerless! ?

What a memory! Yes, my due date was 24/1/05 but I was induced and gave birth on 22/1/05!

    How are you getting on?

Hi, today would be ideal to go online and check to see if you are able to get working tax /child tax credits.
As it is the start of the tax year, it would show you your entitlement for the year.
I *think* because your family income has gone down for this year it will give you a fairly accurate idea. Also as been mentioned, it may be worthwhile enquiring about carers allowance.

Here is the tax credit link to see if you would qualify

    Maybe a trip to CAB?

Don't forget to find out about Council Tax Benefit and Housing Benefit as well.

I don't know if you would get JSA because I don't think you get it if you give up work. There may be other help available though.

You may be eligible for Jobseekers Contribution based as this is based on your previous NI contributions and not your income.

I work for jobcentre plus, yes if you have paid enough nationa insurance conts in last 2 tax years you would qualify but, if you want less than 16 hours you wont qualify- you have to be available and actively seeking at least 16 hours per week.
leaving work doesnt mean automatically you wouldnt be entitled to jsa, they look at the reasons and it goes to an adjudication officer, your reasons would probably be accepted.
