Am I pushing it???

catnor, 30 January, 2014 at 14:46 Posted on Planning 0 13

Hi ladies,

Im getting married on October 18th and I've not even though about my dress yet. Do you think I should really be getting a move on now or do I still have time to spare?

Im quite laid back but when people are asking me how my planning is going they are quite shocked that not much is sorted.

    Hi,

Do you have an idea what style of dress you'd like and where you'd like it from? Lke high street / bridal store etc?
If not i'd maybe start looking, don't need to panic either just yet but I think most dresses in stores if you're having them made to order takes at least 4 months so that may be something to consider?

If you're buying a dress straight off the rails you wont have as much to do maybe some alterations.

Still time to sort stuff but I don't think it'd so any harm to start looking at styles / shops and try some on etc Smiley smile

Have a look at Pinterest and wedding blogs for inspiration. Oftentimes you can find the dress of your dreams on eBay or etsy too x

Everywhere I looked, I was told they needed 8 months notice. I think that's their ideal time frame. So not pushing it at all. You might as well start looking at styles you like and don't like. You might surprise yourself when you try things on.

I put off looking for a dress for ages because booking everything else (tog etc) was more important. After christmas I started looking and to be honest quickly found found the style that suited me the best. My first appointment though, they did tell me I had to order my dress by the end of the month to get in time for any alterations to be done!! I did go a little dress crazy after that and had 5 appointments in two days and a quick evening one but managed to find 'the' dress and ordered it last weekend. I dont get married until 15th August but the dress wont even be back in for my first fitting until the end of June, giving me 6 weeks, rather than the 8 weeks that the shop really wants.

I've rambled on quite alot there! I'd start looking now, not really for 'the' dress but for what suits you.

I was told 6-9 months depending on the dress but mine came in just under 5 months. You should probably start looking soon so you can get a good idea of what style you like and suits you etc. Some dresses do take longer than others

My wedding is on the 28th September and I started looking for a dress during the middle of January. To the shops I've been to so far, they've said that there should be enough time but I should make a decision before it becomes too late. They also can rush the order so that it arrives earlier at an extra cost if you're worried about the dress arriving too late.

I know a bride whose wedding is in December and she's already bought the dress last year, has the suits sorted, etc and I have hardly done it. Makes me also wonder if I'm being too relaxed.

If you're looking for off the peg, you're fine, if you're looking for a bridal shop dress, you're limiting your options by leaving it late because some dress can have up to a year lead in time (and then they have to factor in time for alterations) - my dress took nine months to come in. I would seriously think about booking some appointments sooner than that, even if it's just to get an idea of the dress you want, sometimes it can take a while to find and if you're already leaving it until six months, you're leaving yourself less time. There's no harm in looking sooner, and then you'd have more choice.

Sorry to sound negative, I'm just nervous for you!

It depends on where you are buying from. My dress was bought from ebay and the whole wedding was organised in under 6 months, that was with a huge delay of 2 months due to the venue being a pain in the bum and we still have on month to go so I guess we did it all in about 3 months really! :-)

    Loads of time yet! :-)

Hello, I found my dress last year but was only measured for it at the start of jan. the shop have said it should be in the shop by the end of May still leaving 3 months for alterations etc. as the lovely ladies have said above if you're looking for off the peg you will be fine, and still fine for a bridal shop dress so relax. saying that I was also going for a high street one and spent ages looking and looking and looking and ended up in the shop I ordered from so if you're not sure I would start having a look around :-) most of all enjoy it!! it's been my favourite part so far!! xxx

I am getting married 1 week after you Smiley smile

i have only booked venue photographer band and registrar.

i went and brought my dress and the bridesmaids yesterday, they arrive in May so plenty of time.

I would probably start looking for the dress just in case it takes ages. I started last April and have only just brought mine as I wanted to be sure xxx

We set our date early Dec and booked venue. I bought bridal magazines to look thourgh and some styles in my head. Booked 2 appointment in January, one on Friday and other following Tues. at 1st appointment I narrowed it down to 2 dresses and let my heart overrule my head. Paid my deposit and dress will be here in July with a little alteration on the shoulders. Worries gone, Bridemaid same. Guess it depends how fussy you are but I would go ahead and make appointments to get idea of dress you want and then you can narrow down if you want to order one or buy off peg etc. When you see it you'll know it. Good luck

I'm getting married in 10 weeks and I've not got a dress yet. As everyone has said, if you're going designer you need to leave a good six to nine months, but if you're just getting a sale dress or off the rack then it's far less urgent. I'm actually quite enjoying traumatising people by telling them how late I've left it!
