Am I really that stupid?

Zooropa, 3 December, 2008 at 20:04 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 7

Last night I posted a question on a mobile phone newsgroup. I wrote this:

Hi,
I'm with 3 and up till recently my 3g reception has been fine. Over the past couple of months I have been getting the H symbol on my phone instead of 3g. When I have H I get little to no internet access and have to wait until I get 3G back again before it will work. Can anyone tell me why this is?
Thanks,
Joanne

is that really a stupid question? The reply I got was:

Hi Joanne

Its because you've got the H symbol instead of 3G, if you wait for it
to go back to 3G you will find it works again.

I'm going to use this post as part of my job application for vodafone
customer services, I think I should get the job easily.

I'm feeling quite miserable now but I didn't think it was a stupid question. I did a google search beforehand and came up with nothing - do you think my post really warrented such a reply?

Erm, if you're thick then so am I (and I definitely am not). I think he's an idiot. He hasn't answered your query. I'm still none the wiser to what the H symbol is and why it's appearing instead of the 3g symbol from his reply. I pity anyone who phones Vodaphone for help and gets him on the phone.

H and I both agree that he hasn't answered your question. He's the stupid one, not you.

H says "It's because when 3G isn't showing (and H is), you're no longer connected to a 3G network so are using GPRS instead and some phones don't know how to handle this. If you want to stop this from happening you can manually select your network to use it all the time and this means your phone will understand to use GPRS the whole time and not switch between the 2. Your internet will be slightly slower but if you are in a 3G network you can turn it back on to 3G at that time."

Ok, we have searched and maybe that's a bit wrong. Looks like H stands for higher performance 3G internet connectivity https://www.digitalspy.com/forums/showthread.php?p=22234140 and possibly your phone can't handle this as the better performance stuff is relatively new.

You can try selecting your mobile network to manual and then selecting only 3G and not any other...different options on different phones so hard to explain more. (Some phones have an option to turn off different types of connectivity - depends on what your phone is.)

I read it that the response was making an ironic comment on the ineptitude of voda customer services- not as a sleight on your q.... but then again; i am thick.

Thanks for the replys. i guess I was just over-reacting a little - I shouldn't let internet werdies get to me (after all I am one myself ?).

daisy - thanks for letting me know what it is. Hopefully 3 will let me have some new firmware for my phone. I just had a look - I have the sek850 i andI think it it should be able to handle HSDPA.
