Am I seeing things? Ebay related...

babygreenuk, 2 September, 2008 at 12:50 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 16

Was doubting my old eyes there....has someone really bid that amount for a mobile phone? 😮

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Sony-Ericsson-W910i-BRAND-NEW-STILL-IN-THE-BOX_W0QQitemZ200250562631QQcmdZViewItem?hash=item200250562631&_trkparms=72%3A12%7C39%3A1%7C66%3A2%7C65%3A12%7C240%3A1318&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14

I have this phone in red and believe you me, it is not the best mobile ive had by a long shot!!! Do you think its been a genuine error and they have meant to bid £100? Also the seller has no feedback as of yet. Something not right about it all.

I've seen this on quite a few mobile phones - I assumed it was something dodgy!

I sometimes wonder if it's the seller bidding on their own item as they have changed their mind about selling it. They have probably forgotten you have to pay ebay fees on all items that sell, I think it's around 10%.

I didnt think of this Jo. Thats a big possibility. I knew there was something not right. I like this phone but there is some things it isnt capable of that my last Sony Ericsson was, e.g. doesnt have a flash when using camera, doesnt zoom when used in normal mode etc.

It's either auction wrecking or shill bidding, either way it's been done very badly.

Jo, why would they not just cancel bids and withdraw the item from auction?

The other choices are a nigerian scammer, bidding high, and then uses a fake or stolen credit card to pay for it

Otherwise it could be the person who gave neg feedback, bombing them, by setting up a fake account so that the seller has to pay stupid fees (quite common if you read Moneysaving expert)

That's what my money would be on. H2b had this a couple of years ago when he listed a phone. Although they didn't make ridiculous bids just emailed him with an offer of £200 (or something else stupid) and asked him to send it before the payment was made.

    DUH!!!

Thats a bit sh1tty to do that to someone. Wouldnt be surprised though - probably the downside of ebaying☹️.

I'm not sure, I thought you had to have a good reason to withdraw a listing with bids on it.

    *cough* auction wrecking *cough*

The seller would never have to pay those fees though. The wrecker obviously wouldn't pay, the seller would file a non-paying bidder dispute and and all his fees would be cancelled including the listing fees. Does cause a PITA though of course.

I'm just curious as to why the seller hasn't cancelled the bids or why bidder number one doesn't cancel their £1000 bid as you're perfectly entitled to if you have mistyped?

You do. Such reasons could include - The item is broken. The item has sold elsewhere. Suspected auction wrecking.

The seller only needs to choose one.

There is another ridiculously high bid too, bidder 7 has bid £999.

    Very strange!

I knew there was a technical term but I couldnt for the life of me remember and just missed your reply - DOH

Thing is the seller is a newbie and may not realise they can claim the fees back (or that they ahve to pay if they are shilling)

Im guessing either ebay noticed or the seller did and got ebay to sort it?

It's dodgy buying/selling mobile phones on fleabay. I got diddled but luckily I used my credit card and my credit card company refunded the money to me.

My H has the latest Sony Ericsson and hates it and wants me to sell it for him on fleabay. I've told him I'd rather not.
