Am I the only person who doesn't want to wear a garter?

Mrs.K2b, 29 June, 2014 at 19:37 Posted on Planning 0 29

As it says really!

Now, don't get me wrong, I'm a traditionalist when it comes to weddings - we're having a church ceremony, won't be spending the night before with hubby to be, father giving me away etc, but this whole garter thing I just don't get! When my best friend got married, she spent £150 on wedding day langerie; basque/suspender belt & suspenders/garter - the lot, so when having a chat with her last week and I said I didn't want any of that, not even a garter she was horrified with me to say the least!

i just don't see the point in wearing something that a) nobody is going to see (hubby to be couldn't care less what I wear under my dress) and b) might get shot down in flames for this, I just think they're a bit tacky?!

i don't go in for the whole sexy underwear thing at the best of times (anyone who has ever tried riding a horse while wearing a thong will know what I mean), so I think if just feel like a bit of an tit wearing a garter!

anyone else feel the same or is it just me?

Me neither. I'm not planning to buy any special lingerie at all, just wear comfortable undies. Plus I have quite chunky thighs so I probably wouldn't find a garter big enough! LOL!

I didn't wear one - I wanted to be comfortable and didn't think that a garter would help with that. They're also just not really me and like your OH, my hubby just couldn't have cared less what I wore under my dress.

Glad I'm not the only one! I'll get some nice undies to wear, not been dress shopping yet, but if I end up with a dress that is supportive enough up top it'll just be posh pants I'm buying!

I don't think I could deal with one round my leg the best part of a day! Was going to get one but couldn't get the matching underwear set I wanted and I'm glad I couldn't get the garter to be honest.

if I had one I wouldn't be having oh go under my dress to fetch it Infront of everyone anyway so to me it seems a tad pointless for me.

Totally agree. Each to their own and if it's what you want great but it's up there with sugared almonds in my worst traditions list!

I wont be having one. I've heard enough brides complain about how un-comfortable they are (or can be) for me to want to save my pennies and leave well alone ?

I have visions of it falling off as I walk down the aisle and it being left on the carpet for all to see, so I won't be wearing one!

Mum said I could have hers from when she got married in the 90s to my stepdad, but fortunately no one can find it, so I am being fake bridezilla and saying that if I can't have that one, I'm not wearing one at all.

I know where it is. I hid it.

I'm not - I find it tacky & cringeworthy. But each to their own I'm sure others find stuff I like tacky too.

I think I will, although it does seem - and this thread would agree - that it's something that is done less and less these days. I'm bridesmaid in August and I don't think the bride is planning to have one. I don't plan to spend much on it and I definitely won't be tossing it (or showing it to anyone other than my husband, I imagine), but I still quite like the idea of having one.

I'm having one, but I wear stockings and suspenders quite often to burlesque events and the like, so I'm used to that feeling. I guess they are a bit odd when you think of them in comparison to modern underwear, but I love 50s style underwear and own a few things in that style. Plus I get the feeling not wearing one might be bad luck (I may have made this up).

I won't be getting one either, bit of a tacky old tradition.

I probably won't toss my bouquet either as I wanted to have it preserved afterwards instead as a keep sake, plus I think it's a bit too much pressure on the single female guests & is also a bit old fashioned.

I won't be wearing one, I has an embarrassing incident with one at my first wedding! I hadn't been planning to wear one but my bridesmaid bought it as my something blue so I put it on. Half way through the meal I went to the loo and realised it was missing! I spent 5 minutes searching all the layers of my dress but it was nowhere to be found. Went back to the table and whispered to the groom that I couldn't find it and he said its in the best man's pocket!! Apparently one of the venue staff had found it on the floor and given it to the best man and the boys had taken it in turns to put in on their heads and pretend to be the karate kid!

I won't be wearing one either.

Don't see the point in it to be honest. My dress is quite slim fitting so I don't want to risk having a dodgy looking bulge around my thigh. Plus OH won't be going under the dress to put it off with his teeth haha!

My mum has brought me one, so I will be wearing it out of courtesy, I don't think I would have purchased one for myself.

    I'm not wearing one.

OH's Mum handmade some lace and made me one which I think is very sweet of her but I'm using the excuse that my dress is too slim fitting to wear it. This is a genuine possibility but even so I wont wear it.

I can't remember the tradition behind it anyway and there is no way I'm having my groom take it off mid wedding in front of everyone.

I did spend the equivalent of a months rent on undies tho but that's my passion.

The answer I got when I googled it was that apparently in ye olde times, at the end of the wedding celebrations the new Mr and Mrs would be followed up to their bridal suite (or whatever), and the garter would be thrown from the room to prove that the marriage had been consumated. It's said that it would bring luck to whoever caught the garter, which I think later changed to the modern day garter toss (an American tradition I assume) and whoever caught the garter would be the next to marry.
