amount of wedding cake?

All the weddings i've been to don't have the cake cutting until the evening, in which case you would need enough to feed them all.

I am having sponge cake which doesn't cut up as small as fruit cake, and since we have 140 guests, we are having a 5 tier plus 2 seperate cutting cakes to be kept in the kitchen but served up at the same time. This means you can have a smaller cake but feed everyone and is more economical.

I think you just need to prepare the cake for feeding the evening guests. For the day, the guests will not take it unless it is for desert.
