Annoying comments from my inlaws re my college course

Highlandgirl72, 6 September, 2009 at 21:39 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 13

Hi everyone,

Not been on here for a while but hope everyone is ok!

I have this week started a college course in pharmacy as I have been unemployed since January and pharmacy is a subject I have been interested in for a wee while.

Was at my SIL's house today and my inlaws were asking me about it. MIL asks, "What is it you are doing at college anyway? Is it learning to put pills in boxes? I could do that!" This is from a woman who worked as a cleaner for most of her life (no offence to any cleaners!).

SIL (who has just completed a degree) then says, "It's an NC, isn't it? It'll not be very hard." It is when it is a subject you know very little about.

Gah! Just needed to vent!

Well done for starting the course. Hope you enjoy it. ?

As for the family, ignorance is bliss. I can understand it annoying you but let it go. Put your effort into the course and let them carry on.

    You basically have 2 options:

    a) ignore them, they're obviously just put out that you're trying to improve your prospects although GOK why

    b) sometimes recommended on here, when they say such things just say (in a very calm tone of voice) 'Ouch, that's not very nice' and then move the conversation on. Takes some guts and I wish I could bring myself to do it to MIL sometimes - more for what she says about MrSC than about me, although she has also made some cutting remarks when I was doing an OU course.

    Thanks, LizBjk!

I know, I should just ignore their comments and not let them get to me.

People can be so rude! Maybe MIL was trying to be funny, and just got it a bit wrong? I can't think of an excuse for your SIL though ?

Good luck with the course, I definitely couldn't do it (not very scientifically minded), I am v impressed!

Thanks for your reply as well, spacecadet_99.

I should have said to my MIL that there's more to it than putting pills in boxes and I'm annoyed with myself that I didn't.

Well done you for starting the course. I hope it's really enjoyable. Poo to your inlaws though. Just shows their ignorance though.

    Hi Highlandgirl72,

    Good luck with your course!

The comments were rude, but please bear this in mind - Back in Jan 2001 I started a fast track NC in Tourism, I passed that in June 2001 so progressed onto an HND in Aug of 2001, completed that with merit in Jun 2003 then started the final year of university that September and completed my degree in May the following year.

My then so called friends disowned me for leaving school with just my standard grades (GCSE's) and claimed I'd get nowhere in life as I wasn't going to Uni, when infact most of them didn't get as far as uni and those who did get there only graduated in 2006!

So next time tell your SIL that everyone has to start somewhere and who knows in a few years time you could be Dr Highlandgirl72!!

Again congratuations on getting onto the course you wanted to do and good luck with it all!!

    Luv Victoria

    xx

Thank you, Victoria, for sharing your experiences with me and for the words of encouragement.

It is so nice to be able to come on here and "talk" to people who are pleased for me.

I worked as a trainee dispenser a few years ago and you can tell your MIL from me that there is so much more to it than putting pills in boxes! I worked in both a high street chemist and also a doctors surgery and they were both extremely challenging environments. I think they should be proud of you for enrolling on this course, or any course for that matter!

Best of luck with the course x

Especially the bit where you get to play shop. ?

Only kidding - most of my closest Uni friends were pharmacists.
