Another baking/cake decorating query!

Flowmojo, 6 May, 2011 at 10:57 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 10

My nephews having a carribean themed 17th birthday bbq in less then a month and ive been asked to make him a palm tree cake.....im ok with making the shape (cutting up cake it easy lol) but its how to cover it!normally i use rolled icing which im happy working with *(see pic)*

But a palm tree shape would be incredibly hard to cover with it!!

Any ideas? buttercream will look messy no? this is what im aiming for!!

Hmmm looks to me like they have used buttercream icing and piped it on, time consuming but probably the most fail safe way!! I think your right it could look a bit messy soreading buttercream icing on it

Have you ever used royal icing?

It dries hard so would hold the shape...

I'm a bit confuzzled as why you couldn't use the icing you normally would? Does it not come in those colours or is it the texture you are worried about?

If you used the roll out icing, I would roll a huge piece, lay it over the leafy-type thingies then just use a doweling rod to push it in to the grooves - does that make sense?

And yes, my baking kit does look a bit like a DIY kit too!
