Another dress dilemma - opinions needed ASAP please!!!

Karen1980, 4 September, 2009 at 06:37 Posted on Planning 0 32

Here is the quick story.

Tried a dress on a couple of months ago - fell in love with it.

Saw it in a sale down to £486 - thinking a bargain but I had one dress left to double check before this one just in case.

So I try to dress on that I hadnt got round to trying on and I loved this one too but in a diffeent way!!

Now im very confused - have slept on it but still not feeling like I know which one I want.

The sale dress was the original and it a corset back so makes my figure look very nice whereas the new dress is a zip so not quite so flattering on the figure in terms of a nice slim waist.

Im going to see if the new dress is avilable in a corset style but I doubt it.

The new one however has a train which I think i really like. My dad said the new one looked too madonna ish with the pointed bust but i did try to explain to him thats probably because the dress was too big so the bust area (bones) will be too big as well!

To make it even harder the shops had very different lighting as well so the new one sparkeld whereas the sale one didnt so much.

Im about a size 10 so wondering if the new one would be overpowering too much.

Im not sure what to do!! couldnt sleep last night and when i did I dreamt about the dresses - oh dear!!

Looking at the pics again this morning I think i lke the new one better but feel bad now as that ones not in a slae and I now know my dad likes the other one more.. ?

Oh and the sale end on Saturday ?

Here are the pics.

I honestly prefer the first one, its beautiful and the corset back is bonus, but the second one is lovely too. Have you spoke to anyone to see if its possibe to add a corset to it? x

I prefer the first one. they are very similar style - but you say the first one flatters your figure more, and its gorgeous and on sale - which is also very important! I'd go for that one.

What is it you like about the first one compared to the second?

I am worried that the 'new' one will be a bit too much - i dont want to look like Jordan!?

The corset backs just make you feel much better and take inches off.

It didnt help that the 'new' one I tried on was way to big so was hard to get the wow effect whereas the sale one fitted perfect.

Im onto the enquiries this morning about changing it to a corset back.

I like the detail on the bust on the first one - the fabric bit that goes across, also the contrast between the top and bottom materials. I also like the structured waist (diagonal lines on the sides) and it's very princessy. a little hard to tell as second one is on a model and long view as well - but that's what I like about the first.

22Tango - Thanks! the second one AKA new one has the detailing like the sale ones centre panel but all over the bodice.

My mum notcied fake pearls on the new one and went off to panic in the corner as she's convinced pearls are bad luck!

No idea!! but it didnt help!! I think its because she has been married twice and the first time she had a church pearls and a big dress. She got divorced and then re-married to my dad in a registry office and a small reception.

She'd convinced if I get married in a church then it'll end in tears! bless her she doesnt realise the deciding factor to success is if you love your fiance and he loves you!! not if its a church or perals giving you bad luck!!

I like the first one best. I can see what your dad means about the top looking Maddona'ish (I was expecting cones lol) it's the way it curves down to a deeper cleavage.

Mines a vote for the first dress too - I like that the detail on the bust is different to the rest of the bodice. Another couple of plus points are that it has a corset back and its on sale!!!!!

The second dress is lovely too but I prefer the 1st - go and get it girl!!!!!!

I prefer the first one too. I particularly like the ruching over the bust. Corset back is much more flattering.

    Hi Karen

Personally i like the detailing and ruching of the first one .... however i think you have to choose what you want ........the dress i choose i loved but kind of ruled out as i wanted a corset back too after trying it on i fell in love with it and a few phone calls later the manufacturers agreed to make it into a corset back all for £100 which i think is reasonable.....

    HI Karen,

I guess i am to blame for the second dress after i told you about it ?

The picture of the second dress really dosnt do it any justice, it really is gorgeous in real life.

When i tried it the sample was too big so didnt look right in the boob area either but i got my mum to hold it at the back to show me what it would look like.

I too want a corset back and when i asked the woman in the shop she said it could be changed but would just take the woman a little while to alter. (did you go to Elys in Wimbledon??)

Personally i prefer the second one because i know what it looks like and feels like in real life.

Dont forget that if you do get it from Elys you get the bridesmaids dress free aswel = so you would need to weight up the benefit of that in comparison to the other dress.

Why dont you think of it like this to help you make a decision -

If both dresses were completly FREE which dress would you chose????

A lady at work thought that the sale one is too fussy oh what to do!!

I like the idea of a train but with it hitched up after the ceremony it wont look so nice

Yeah i have found it really hard to imagine what a dress looks like when it is too big.

Have you got pictures of you in either of the dresses?

If you have share them and we can critique!

I think the dresses are very very similar so its not like you are going to pick one and then totally regret it.

It sounds to me like you are trying to talk yourself into the first one because its in the sale?

Erm, this might just be me, but aren't they both almost exactly the same? for that reason, i can't decide between the two. but they are both really princessy and pretty.

shoegal, that piece of advice about the dress being free, wouldn't have worked for me. i think i would have gone with the JP dress i lusted after☹️

    Hi,

I can't see the dresses unforunately but here is my advice...buy neither for now.

If the sale dress wasn't in the sale would you like it? Sales are very tempting and I believe can make you like something much more just because it is saving money. Don't rush into buying something just because the sale ends at the weekend unless you are 100% sure it is your favourite dress.

When is your wedding? Do you need to choose right now for timescales?

You like both dresses for different reasons so unless you are pushed for time I'd keep looking and maybe even consider having a dress made for you to combine all the things you like.

Why don't you think the train bustled up won't look so nice? I loved my train up but only did it well after the first dance so evening guests could see the full dress.

Whilst corsets do give you a fab waist boy was mine uncomfortable at night time after the meal. My bm lossened the laces a bit but that meant the dress wasn't as flattering and didn't sit perfectly which bugged me but I insisted on eating all of my meal and then just wasn't comfortable! I might be the only person who thinks this but in some ways I regret having a corset back.

Wish I could see piccies ☹️

    Lx

BW i dont think you could have picked a better, lovelier dress for your wedding.

IMO JP dresses are overprices and hang horribly!

Just found out to alter it to a croset it £200 so quite a bit of cash and then proabbly out of my budget.

So I must decide based on the zip!

Hi Karen - Can you negotiate on the £200 and is that a manufacturers £200 or dress shop £200 if you get my drift? Mine would have cost roughly £200 but as im spending a lot of money on my dress i negotiated and got mine to a sensible £100 may be worth a shot if you like it that much...!!

I would shop around for the alterations price, dont just take the first quote and remember to negotiate.

Also when the dress is actually in your size the zip may look fine - if i remember rightly the second dress had a elastic pully inny thingy that did the job of a corset

They're in different shops so cannot try them on at the same time which is a real pain!

So far I have pro's and cons:

sale good: no train so dont have to pin up - lace up back so gives the illusion of an amazing figure -the first dress i tried on and fitted perfectly

sale bad : no train for the pictures, is it too fussy? but at the same time too plain and not enough wow?

new dress: good - the train looks pretty - ( i know this contradicts!!), the sparkle, maybe more wow?

new dress : bad - the zip back - the train pin up for the rest of the day, the possible madonna look, its not my dad's favourite

What is it about pinning up the train you aren't keen on and maybe us old marrieds can help?

I know you will want your dad to like the dress but I think you should just consider your own opinions. You are wearing it, you'll be in the pics etc etc so imo what your dad prefers shouldn't really matter.

Can't you keep trying dresses on and see if you find one with sparkle, with a train (although not sure if you do want a train or not), and a corset back?

I personally prefer the first one. And regarding the question about pearls on the last page, I believe they are meant to represent tears on your wedding day..Im wearing them anyway!!

I don't think you need a train with such a full skirt - it has the wow factor without it and the detailing on the top half is gorgeous. I think if you don't like the 2nd dress with the skirt bustled up and you prefer the corset on the first you should go for the first. You will only feel uneasy at the evening reception once the skirt is bustled and by going for the first dress it looks just as good in the day as it does in the evening. And it will be easy to dance about in!

    Thanks everyone for their help!

As it was the decision was easier than I thought!

I arrived at the 'new' dress shop on Saturday and tried it on - it wasnt as wow for me as i remembered and i had some real doubts about the detailing all around and even more when the lady said they wouldnt touch the bust bones (to make it flatter chester like me) when they did the alterations.

Anyway I went off the see the sale dress and as soon as she was getting it off the rail I was grinning stupidly. I put it on and it felt wow wow wow!! and decided there and then that yep i needed a wobble to know that this was really the one!!❤️ ❤️ I took some pics which I'll post ina minute!!
