Another irrational advert dislike... I'm getting old, aren't I?

Oh Zippy, 25 June, 2008 at 17:22 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 10

A radio one this time... I heard this repeated many times a couple of weekends ago on Virgin Radio (don't normally listen to it so don't know if it was just that weekend or an ongoing ad).

Basically, it was a kid in a bored voice going 'the cinema, the skating rink, the burger place... the cinema, the skating rink, the burger place... the cinema... And then the voice over said something like 'take your kids somewhere more interesting this weekend' and it was about a film or something, implying that the imaginary world of the films was somewhere new and exciting for the kids to go.

Everytime I heard it my blood boiled because a) as a kid doing any one of those things would have been a treat so great I'd have looked forward to it for weeks and have been so incredibly excited about that I couldn't believe that kids were being encouraged to state / feel that these were boring and b) my entire childhood was spent losing myself in imaginary worlds that were provided by books.

I'm getting to be an old fuddy duddy, aren't I? ?

Nah, sounds reasonable enough to me zippy! I'm not old and one of my pet peeve is ungrateful kids without manners.. they don't need encouraging to tell their parents that their treats are boring.

The advert that makes me cringe is the AA one. Not sure if they show it anymore. There is a mum in a car saying "i got insurance form the AA Tom" then pretending to reply for him cuz he's an ignorant grunting teenager that is incapable of everyday chat.

But that said if MY mum was her I'd ignore her too. Irratating bint.

*big sigh* thats better.. out of my system now!

Blossy, I've not seen that one but in general all those things that seem to glamourise bad manners or make them somehow acceptable rile me.

I remember my mum getting very irate over the 'if you know what's good for you' weetabix advert, on the grounds it was excessively aggressive / bullying ?

Talking of Weetabix I hate the "family" advert with each member of the family droning on about how much they luuuurve Weetabix and "if they have fruit on it then that's a good to start to the day" and "that's why we get through 48 a week". WELL HAVE TOAST THEN!! Honestly, could they have chosen a more stereotypical middle class bunch of dullards if they'd tried?

I need to get out more ... particularly when the ads are on .... ?

You'll probably think I'm being sad but its the Oeros advert where the kid waving biscuits in front of the dogs nose. I just think that in light of the media hype about dogs biting kids, an advert like that is really irresponsible as kids shouldn't be either left alone with a dog or waving food in front of them and it makes me cross.?

It's here if you've not see it http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3PinnMQqNr4&eurl=http://www.dogsey.com/showthread.php?t=88684

I used to consider things like cinema, burger places and skating rinks treats too. Well, not so much the skating rink (unless you counted ice skating) but I lived 2 seconds away from the beach and there was a skating rink on the promenade.

I hate adverts. I do like the laughing baby Cow & Gate one at the minute though. Oh, and the Oreo boy when he dunks it and says "Mmmmm". I don't like the advert, just the little boy.
