Another tea and coffee post 'whichever is easiest' - Grr!

MarineGirl, 5 November, 2008 at 16:29 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 9

Whenever my FIL is round, I offer him 'tea or coffee?' (hoping he'll say no time for either, but so far not!)

He always says 'whichever is easiest'.

I always say 'they are both instant - one is from a jar, the other from a box next to the same jar, I'll be using the same kettle now FFS* which do you actually want?'

Then he always says 'whichever you're having'.

And then I always say 'I am having water, you have known me for 4 years now, you know I don't have either, which do you want'.

When I'm feeling in the mood, like to say 'I'll just get you a water like me then'. That usually prompts a decision. Oh I know it's not the worst PIL situation on Hitched... but it's such a pantomime! Just tell me what you want man, godammit!!!! <rant over/> ?

*that bit is said in the eyes, to MrMG, not out loud, of course!

Well i s'pose coffee is nominally easier, as you don't have to wait for it to brew, and remove a teabag

    nominally

In our house, that would be instant coffee as we make tea with teabags.

In my parents house, they make 'proper' coffee with a cafetierre (however you spell it) so coffee is more of a faff than tea.

I'd give him coffee in the morning and tea in the afternoon

Well there's a debate that could run and run ? Don't you have to put coffee in with non-scolding hot water? And even if you don't bother - it needs a stir to make sure the granules are all - melted? - whereas a teabag can do it's own thing and just have a quick squeeze. So I think tea is easier to make.

    Nominally!

I always feel sorry for my visitors anyway. As I don't drink either, I can't translate the colour to a taste. I'm sure I make pretty rank tea or coffee!

I wish i knew MORE of these whatever your having people! Usually I'm at work or home and you offer to stick the kettle on and then you have to remember about 8 different recipes for the same drink!

Tea is what's usually offered in our house as there's nearly ALWAYS a teapot on the go. My mum makes me chuckle as she will usually phrase it like "Fancy a brew? or are you one of those AWKWARD ones" meaning coffee drinker!

But that's just exactly what he doesn't get! (despite my explicit explanations!) It doesn't put me out to lift a teabag instead of a spoon of freeze dried coffee. It would put me out more to waste my time making one drink when he would prefer another. And if he genuinely doesn't mind - that's still not reason not to decide for himself!

It's not that big a deal of course ?

To me that means "tea, if you're making it, coffee if you're not" it never occurs to me that people don't use a pot ?

We were asked this when I first visited my Italian friend's parents. They claimed they were both equally easy. It was late and we knew that they didn't do instant coffee and would fire up the espresso machine for coffee, so we plumped for tea...... and then had to wait for the pan of water on the stove to boil. It took about 20 mins ?

We tried to convince them not to bother once we realised, but they wouldn't have any of it.

Which is fair enough, except FIL has been popping in for a cup of tea for 4 years now, and he knows darn well there's no teapot involved. We do have a lah-di-dah expensive built in coffee machine that MrMG insisted upon and has (predictably) underused. But we do not have a teapot. I just leave the bag mashing in the mug. Perhaps I need a teapot. I fear it is like a gravy boat though - if you get to 33 without one, you're probably going to manage to 93 without one!
