Ants, ants, everywhere

HeidiHole, 29 May, 2009 at 16:13 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 13

Earlier today I was getting ready to go out and Wizzy found an ant on her backpack by the front door, so I opened the front door and flicked him outside. I looked at the wooden step the door sits on and there were a few ants on that so I did the ant dance, I must have disturbed them with my stamping because when I came back in there were loooooooooads of them on the carpet! I got the hoover out and must have sucked up 50 of them, then I turned around to turn the hoover off and there were about 10 on the dining room door. It was like a fecking invasion, I'm still itching ?

I've been to Tesco and bought some Rentokil stuff to put down tomorrow, luckily we're away for the night so hopefully it will do it's job. But, will the carpet have to come up? There were some in the edge of it that I couldn't get to. I know they're only ants, but it's horrible and the sheer number of them made me a bit weepy.

Yes I'm a wuss but I can't help it <wibble>

I doubt the carpet will have to come up - it will be fine.

Get some of those little ant traps - they are a bloody marvel. The ant goes in, eats something tasty, and then wanders off to die (possibly killing other anty friends along with it, I'm never sure if they actually take the poison back to their nests or not). We had a huge ant problem once, put loads of the little ant traps down, and went on holiday. When we came back not a live ant in sight.

(Mind you, i did then have to vacuum up about half a dyson worth of dead ants that had accumulated in corners, but after that - no ants!)

I was going to suggest the old washing powder & boiling water combo but that won't be any good for your carpet.

Urgh, I hate ants. Flying ants are THE worst!

That's the stuff I bought, Flowery, little pods that they go in then take the poison back to the nest so it kills the queen and the colony. How long are you meant to leave it down for, do you know? Only I have a toddler here so can't really leave it around unless we're away, which we are tomorrow but not sure if that's long enough as we're back Sunday.

ATG, sticky tape? Genius! Will do this as well.

    Thank you ?

You have to leave them down for quite a while - a week I think. We had them and didn't see ants for a couple of days so took them up and then the ants came back. Thankfully we were going away so we put new ones down and left them for a week and that did the trick.

You poor thing. I'm phobic about them and they freak me out so I always have a stash of ant powder in the cupboard. I try to see where they are coming in and squirt a load there and sort of do a line across the threshold so there's no way they can get in without going over the powder. I also squirt it outside whereever I can see them coming out of the house/going to their nest. That gets rid of the feckers. [shudder]

Gah, Hitched crashed on me and wouldn't let me reply!

I think the nest is in between the brick paving right under the front door step, I've already been out and put bleach and boiling water all over it, but that's only a temporary solution, innit. Still, hopefully the poison will work and I won't have to worry about it anymore. I def can't leave it down for a week though, bugger, although Mr Hole is going to put sealant around all the cracks under the door so that should help too.

Urgh, they give me the heebie jeebies, I'm with you Emma.

Thanks, everyone, I appreciate it ?

<Flowery, do you need a Holio hug? Have one anyway ?>

My reaction would be to run screaming outside and book into a Premier Inn. Not sure what my action after that would be, I'm a bit dim at practical housey things. My solution to maggots in my kitchen bin was to dump the whole bin in the wheelie bin.

We have a problem with ants invading at this time of year and always use those the poison pod things. They are great and usually solve the problem in a couple of days. We have 2 small children and have always left the pods out and had no problem. They are usually sealed anyway and the ants have to actually crawl into them so I imagine it's quite hard to get to the stuff. They look quite boring too so my kids have never really bothered with them.

Hope you get rid soon because I hate them. They make me go itchy all over and I end up in a manic hoovering frenzy trying to get rid of them. YUCK!!

Horrible little feckers, they try to get in our back door in utility room (door is thoroughly decrepid) the little pod thingys are working well and keeping them out now, but I had to gather up Adam and his army from across the kitchen floor first, a squirt of dettol cleaner to stun, and a kitchen roll mop & stamp to ensure death. I'm ok to put a pod thingy by that door though, as the kids don't go in there. Hope you can get rid of them.
