Any advice on steaming my own dress?

littlelady01, 1 October, 2010 at 11:33 Posted on Planning 0 6

Ok so I need to steam my dress and my 3 bridesmaid dresses so me and mum are going to do it ourselves with her clothes steamer that she has just bought. So has anyone had any experience steaming dresses and can give me any any advice, my dress also has a train if that makes any difference.

I ended up getting my dress from china and it came in a package that would have fitted in a shoe box lol. Mum went to find out how much to get it steamed and was quoted £100 for mine and £50 for each bridesmaid dress thats almost as much as we paid for the dresses.

Advice: do it very carefully and at a distance. making slow sweeps downwards make sure you steam the dresses inside out, so that if it does mark them (which it shouldn't) it won't be visible

Also make sure the room is well ventilated otherwise they could get damp rather than steamed.

You need to steam it with the train down and leave it down for 24 hours so as not to steam a crease into your dress.... that is the only thing i know

My mum was horrified when she heard the shop asst say 'I've just been steaming your dress'.

Silk can shrink when its been steamed....

mum took my dress home and ironed it once she had taken the hem up.

Well I need to steam my pew ends. They are organza sashs really that are to be tied, but came in a really well packed folded envelope, so needa get the seams out of them. My mum has suggested hanging them on a clothes airer and using her steam generator iron and just steaming them with it. Just try and do it without touching the dresses with the steamer and leave them to hang, as they will be slightly damp. You should be fine tho!! Don't panic too much. and if you hang them out the day b4 you steam them, the actual weight of them might pull out some of the wrinkles, and make the job easier!

come to think of it i'll needa do my veil as well!!
