Any Hitchers who go indoor Rock Climbing?

Stupidgirl45, 10 June, 2009 at 12:21 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 5

Just wondering. OH + I have just started going - OH is really into it.

I'm getting there - although I'm cr*p but I only know a couple of other people who like it.

I just wondered if any hitchers were into it - and if any of you guys go to The Castle in North London....

hmmmmmmmmm

SG ?

I am married to a climber and so did start climbing when I met him. I also stopped when heavily pregnant and have climbed a bit since, but its tricky with a toddler when there are only two of you! It is a great sport, good for toning without really realising it, but also such a great way to just spend time outdoors. We have had some wonderful climbing based holidays and you see amazing parts of the country (and world!) that you wouldn't otherwise see. I remember hanging off the top of a mountain in the Alps eating lunch, thinking how amazing it was to be there, just casually eating my sandwich while clipped on several hundred metres above the ground!

We are Bristol based so have a lot of outdoor climbing available close by, but I can really recommend getting outside (if you haven't already) as its quite different from climbing indoors, and I think more inspiring (but obviously, each to their own!)

My husband is a keen climber and trains indoors over the winter,He climbs outdoors in the summer as we live right in the peak district so plenty climbing here.

I dont climb due to chronic arthritis but I love to watch .

    Hey thanks for the replies

I've not done any lead climbing yet - I'm still doing 4A climbs and starting some 4Bs but hoping to progress more quickly after the wedding.

it is surprisingly tiring doing it - and i'm finding it really hard to get the hang of belaying and watching OH when he climbs. Any tips to get used to belaying - it feels so awkward.

I've yet to buy proper shoes + harness, i'm just renting them at the mo.

I haven't climbed for a couple of years now and have moved out of London but used to climb at The Castle and also Mile End - they are both great centres.

It's a great sport - it's physical and mental and frankly the heights and risk of falling scared me stupid but I still did it ?

Re. the belaying - I found doing the introduction course at The Castle gave me a lot more confidence and having a more experienced climber looking over my shoulder while I practiced.

Zebra - I did the introduction course and I've been climbging every weekend for nearly 6 weeks now but it still freaks me out having someone's life in my hands!!!!

Did you find you progressed naturally or was it slow?? I am terrified of heights but I am weirdly enojying it.
