Any knitters out there?

Lots05, 22 January, 2013 at 12:18 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 2

Does anyone know if you can use balls of wool that have been in a wardrobe for years? Or would they have dust mites or something?

I want to start knitting and my mum has needles and wool stored in a wardrobe which hasn't been touched for years, so was hoping I could use these instead of buying lots of new stuff.

Thanks!

I am a crocheter! I wouldn't use old wool. Not really because of dust mites (I hadn't thought of that) but because wool has some quite biologically sticky and weird substances in it and I find it becomes difficult to work with, the older it is.

Depends what you're knitting though. To get your eye in, it will be fine. To make a Christmas stocking, it will be fine. But I wouldn't make a baby blanket out of it (too itchy).

I agree with FTLOMB, it' would be ok for practice or a craft project but it can dry out and become quite course over time.
