Any one any experience with selling books online ?

DDiva, 18 January, 2009 at 14:29 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 13

I've decided its time for a clear out of all my books.

I would like to make a little money by selling them but having looked at ebay the prices and the amount of unsold items it just dosnt seem worth the hassle.

I then spotted this site which sounds great but almost to good too be true....... https://greenmetropolis.com/

Has anyone used this site or similar ?

Thanks

DD xx

I think you're right about it not being worth the hassle on ebay. I think I would only sell valuable books (eg first editions) or sets of books on there. Don't know about the other sites, sorry.

I found Amazon Marketplace far and away the easiest and best place to sell books. I have listed on Green Metropolis but there's just not enough turn over - I think I only ever sold about two books on there. Amazon don't make you pay anything if they don't sell, unlike eBay, and because he buyer pays a flat postage credit, you can sell a book for 1p and still make a profit on it. Not much, but if you list a lot then it all adds up. Listing is easy, too.

I've listed a load on green metropolis. I've sold a few - they aren't fast to go, so you might want to factor that in. If you don't have space to store them, you might find a different way to pass them on easier. You don't get much for them when you factor in postage, but you get more than you would if you gave them away... I like doing it this way though

I use Amazon marketplace to seel all my unwnated academic books. It's really easy it list, however I'd say the charges a bit steep and as the postage is set if you ahve a heavy book you'll loose money on that as well.

I used to use Green Metropolis to buy and sell books and did quite well on that site. I found it easy to use and didnt have any problems.

I guess it might depend on the genre of the books that you are selling?

I've sold a few on greenmetropolis too and like it.

There's no guarantee how fast a book will sell - some have in minutes, others have been listed for months - but you do get more cash than you probably would from Ebay or from a secondhand book seller.

If you're in a rush to clear them out for space reasons then you'd be as well taking them to Oxfam, I guess, but if you're happy to list a pile and wait and see then definitely worth giving greemet a go.

The only bug bear I have is that while I always send books promptly and tell others their book has arrived and leave feedback not everyone is so diligent. I have three or four books in past month I've sent out without confirmation of arrival yet.

But it doesn't affect the money side and Greenmet give you five stars if the buyer doesn't say the book has/hasn't arrived after 6 weeks so it's annoying rather than a real put off.

I'm finding Amazon works well, but I've not sold any of my old novels on there yet. I listed loads a couple of weeks back and cookery books and academic texts are flying out though. Yes, sometimes you lose on the postage but so far I've not been out of pocket with any and mostly the postage alone makes a profit.

I think I might give greenmet a try with a few, I quite like the way it works. TBH if I'm only going to get £1 or so I'd rather just give them to a charity shop or the local library .....

Thanks for all the info guys its much appreciated

I've listed quite a few on greenmetropolis but as others say it is quite slow. From a list of about 50, I've sold 20 in 2 years. TBH I just leave them listed and forget about them (they are in a box in the loft), then it's a surprise when you get an email saying you've sold one. It's strange thing but I do find that I don't sell any for months then will sell 3 or 4 in a fortnight, that's happened a couple of times. The site and system is easy to use and I've never had any problems.

I sell mine on Amazon and they do seem to shift very quickly, esp. if you price them just below the lowest price. The last one I listed took 1 hr and 20 mins to sell. ?

Obviously if you want to sell at the top price, you may have to wait longer.
