Any opticians about?

timotei, 4 August, 2008 at 13:24 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 8

Hi

bit of background.....

My daughter is 2.5 and I noticed her left eye was 'wondering' a bit so asked for an appointment at the eye hospital. Had appointment and was told that there was a problem (intermittant convergant squint, likely accommodative) and she was sent for a refraction (glasses test).

Was told she is longsighted with a prescription of +7.00 (right) and +7.50 (left)

Everyone comments on what a strong prescription that is, especially for a child of her age........ I am thinking of asking for a second opinion as I (unqualified as I am) really didn't think her eyesight was bad at all, just a bit squinty! And nobody that knows my daughter would have thought she had a problem.

Is +7 such a strong prescription and would you expect to have noticed sight problems by now?

Thanks.

+7 is a strong prescription. I don't know if it is for a child of that age or how much you would have noticed by now.

If you are in anyway concerned that it's wrong take her to another opticians and get an eye test done, even if it's just to put your mind at rest.

    Thanks Numbnuts.

I will call the eye hospital and see what they say.

It worries me that if she is a +7 at 2, what will she be in 20/30 years time - if it works like that......

It's a long time since I worked in optics, but a +ve presription is unlikely to get much stronger as time goes by, in fact, her eyesight may well improve with age and her prescription won't need to be so strong.

It's the -ve prescriptions that deteriorate more with age. My brother was about a -2 at age 4, but is now a -8 as an adult!

It doesn't necessarily work like that (I'm not an optician btw, did a years optometry degree though, before I got bored).

Long sightedness is rarer amongst younger people than short sightedness. A lot of people develop long sightedness in their old age (and so need reading glasses), but the reason behind this is different (if I remember correctly the lens is unable to change shape as easily), this is probably why people are saying "at her age". It wouldnt necessarily mean her eyesight would get worse with age, as they would not necessarily add on to her problems IYSWIM.

Thanks AllyDrew and NumbNuts - that is ressassuring!

It was just the reaction of the staff at the opticians when we went in with the prescription, they said they had never seen such a strong prescription in a 2 year old.

Think I will double check when I go to collect the glasses though.

I was long sighted as a child, not much 3+ my eye sight improved and I became short sighted. My brother is a 6+ and 9+ (!) he wore glasses from a yr old. His eye sight has remained the same for ages. He had a bad squint that has been semi-corrected.

    Thanks Rhea.

Can I ask if your brothers eyesight was noticiably poor? My daughter doesn't seem to have any problems apart from the squint.

She can pick up small objects, always names things in books etc and doesn't bump in to things (well no more than a normal 2 year old)

No, because he was a baby when he started wearing glasses. It was the squint that promted the trip to the drs.
