Any positive stories please? Transferring money to wrong account.

Canary, 29 April, 2013 at 07:19 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 29

So OH transferred nearly £2000 out of our barclays joint account into our santander joint savings. Only he typed the wrong account number and we only realised at the back end of last week. Ive contacted santander and I'm also going to pop into a branch today to try get it sorted.

That said, when you google the issue it does not sound positive and basically if the recipient of the money has spent it already, we're screwed. Anyone got any positive stories on something similar happening to calm me down?

I have done this before. £80 from my halifax account to a natwest account but because I did it via a faster payment service, you can recall the money. I went into the bank, they did some processing and asked for it back from the otherside. To be honest however I never followed it up as it was an expenses claim so they let me claim for it again but I reall hope fingers crossed that you get it back. Anyone receiving that kind of money in their account will know about it and really should do the honest thing and not spend it!

Surely if the other person spent it that would be theft ??

Fingers crossed you manage to sort it.

Although it usually winds me up, I am now thankful for my online bank transfer system.

I have to submit both account number and name. If it's an account number I haven't used before, a computer rings me and I have to verify the details on a linked computer/phone transaction.

Fingers crossed it gets sorted. The vast majority of people would, I think, be honest here, especially given the amount involved and even more so if they can see an actual person's name on the other end of the transfer i.e. not a faceless banking error.

Could it maybe be that it has gone 'nowhere' as in the sort code and account number he transferred to may not be valid together? I know someone that it happened to with their mortgage ? - solicitor tranferred to the wrong account. Got it back fine, just took a few days because it had gone to an account number that didn't exist!

Hi all, sorry manic morning (as usual!)

I spoke to Santander this morning and it seems more positive than google would lead me to believe! I have to write to a certain department in santander detailing all the details and then they sort it from there. The guy on the phone said that it shouldn't be an issue so fingers crossed! Thanks for all the vibes, just hoping its as easy as they have said

FTLOMB - he put in our names but it still went through unfortunately.

Google is always the worst when you are worried about anything but we still can't stop ourselves from going there first! Hope it all gets sorted promptly and you can have the money back in your account with no problems!

Normally I am quite good at filtering out the worst stories and just reading the articles which are useful/relevant but this time even the banks pages were telling me there isn't a lot they can do!

I thought, just over a year later that I would give you all an update on this!

We went back and forth with Santander before they eventually told us unless the person gave the money back, we wouldn't get it.

The individual was contacted, refused to return. Got the police involved, they said they would return but didn't, Santander closed the complaint again.

We decided to complain to the financial ombudsman and today I have finally heard that Santander will refund us the full amount (a significant sum!) and compensation! I still want to get the bugger who effectively stole from us but just glad that, 13 months later, we're about the get our money back!

Moral of the story - triple check the account details when transferring online!

Oh my goodness, what an ordeal for you! But that is an absolutely brilliant update! Well done to you for chasing it and taking it so far.

Today I shall be more thankful than annoyed when Halifax insist on ringing me to double check the account details for new payments I set up!

I'm so glad you finally got the money back. The horrible person who stole your money - who would do that? The bank should be able to make a withdrawal from their account no problem. It's shocking that they can't.

That's absolutely shocking that someone would refuse to give it back!

Mind you - I just bought this topic up with my office and apparently I'm in the minority of people who would never consider spending someone elses money ?

So glad that you had a good outcome! I would feel like it was bonus money after all this time, so I hope that you enjoy it ?

And to the thief who kept your money, I hope that it bites you in the arse!

Great news! I can't believe it's been a year to get it sorted though.

What a horrid person to refuse to give it back. I hope karma pays them a visit very soon! It seems madness that when the individual can be contacted noone can be forced into returning money that isn't theirs!. As Funky said, it's theft.

I shall be quadruple checking this next time I have to transfer anything.

Thanks all - I can't believe they can get away with it! The police said that even if we eventually went to court, they could get away with not paying it back - it's awful! We're going to say that we're happy to continue help santander and the police if wanted.

    Glad its resolved now though!

My OH did this - he literally typed 1 digit of the SC wrong and it went into someone else's account. He called the bank and explained and they got it back for him. I don't know all the ins and outs but I know he was majorly freaking out as it was £10k!

ETA - just realised I hadn't read all the posts and didn't realise this was an old thread! It's terrible that they could do that!

Wow what a lesson. Glad you are progressing getting your money back, but astounded that it has taken a year. Will defo make sure I triple check bank numbers before transferring. What awful people for not retuning money that isn't theirs. Like others have said, thats theft. Surely they should have realised that the payment came from noone they knew and they should have quieried it at the time. Awful.

But like I say, yay on getting your money Smiley smile

This happened to my friend's mum - they paid the funds for her mortgage into the wrong account. It was a huge problem since she was waiting to sign and get the keys!

Glad to hear it is all being sorted out.

Mr Erin when he was at university had money stolen from his account and so did some of his housemates. Santander (Abbey National as they were then) were very unhelpful. They would only assist him when he persuaded a police officer to go into a branch with him. He got all his money back but it took a while.
