any project managers out there?

AnnaBanana, 7 April, 2008 at 18:21 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 8

I have an interview for a junior-ish project management role on Weds.
It will be my first proper PM role, and they havent given much of a job description (a few lines!). They say the interview will be asking questions about key competencies, so I have to give examples etc.
What would you say the key competencies were in this sort of role?

?

If they're going to be asking surrounding the key competencies of the role, can't they give them to you beforehand?

If not, I would say the following:

    Planning & Organising
    Negotiating
    Influencing
    Team Work
    Customer Service

I'm not a PM but I have been a Business Analyst previously and have been involved with projects.

I'm just trying to find an old job description to see if it says anything on there. I'll let you know ....

Hmm I am - it really depends on the project scope; broadly
    Planning
    Organisation
    Budgeting
    Risk Management
    Resource management
    Potentially team management

Is it within the NHS? I seem to recall that's the area that you wanted to work in.

I would go back to the company and ask them what key comp they are looking for. This way you can prep properly for the interview.

I work in PM in the financial sector (my speciality is planning rather than general project management) and agree with WES about the key competencies, maybe also throwing in Stakeholder management (bit of a buzzword with us)

In terms of prep, use these competencies to illustrate stories about yourself, i.e. a time when you have demonstrated good influencing skills, or a time when you have used negotiation to settle a dispute. Have a store of these on standby so you can just trot them out. and good luck!
