moonpie1985, 27 June, 2012 at 16:32 Posted on Planning 0 3

Just wondering about currency - and roughly how much things cost / how much we might need?

i have had a bit of a search, but can only find bits and bobs of information which seems to be outdated.

I went in 2004, so not overly recently. As far as I can remember things were very cheap... Food and gifts that is. We used the dirhams when we went. How long are you going for? I also took money out when I was over there but cos I went with family I only used to buy souvenirs. If noone else comes back on this I will ask my mate who went 2 years ago for a week how much she took!

We went last October and changed currency at the airport at marrakech into dirhams. When we ate in the Riads we stayed in it was pretty similar to eating out at somewhere like pizza express here in cost but we did go to local bakeries for lunch most days which for a selection of pastries and drinks for 2 people cost under £1. Some of the places we stayed were not in a village / town so we had no choice but to eat in the Riad but other times we wondered out into town and found a variety of options available. Pretty much all the food we had was gorgeous, only 1 bad meal the whole time we were there.

edited to say, we bought very little in the way of gifts to bring back so cant comment much about prices of those, i did see a handbag but it didnt seem particularly cheap (it was nice mind you and beautifully made but its not like im short of handbags lol) and I didnt want to haggle at that point, others in our riad did say they had got some bargins at the souks though.

I went on MiniMoon in September. We stayed in Marrakech, I understand that Agadir is more tourist friendly. We realised pretty quick to ask the price of anything before we picked it up. Haggling in the souks is compulsory but don't expect to be listened too if you are a woman! One mas actually "shushed" me by putting his hand in my face to shut me up.... That said its the sort of thing I expected in that culture so It was all part of the fun. The currency is the Dirham, you can normally get it from the airport (we flew from Luton) we struggled to find it in high street change places.

I went last August. As you can't get currency until you get there, I just took a chunk out at a cash machine on arrival and then another one later on, when I knew how much I'd need.

Costs depend on how good you are at bartering! You can get some bargains if you try hard enough! food and drink is fairly cheap (except for alcohol and pop) but they always give you extras such as bread, so you'll be expected to tip.

Taxis and buses are cheap so getting around isn't a problem

Jealous you're going, I wanna go back! Hope you have a fab time Smiley smile
